The Adeptus Custodes in Warhammer 40,000!

After decades of waiting, the Golden Legion is finally coming to Warhammer 40,000 in full, with new units, commanders, a codex and much more. (Did you really think we’d stop at Trajann Valoris?)

This year, the Adeptus Custodes will be transformed into a fully fledged army with a vast array of new units to conquer the battlefields of the 41st Millennium. After so many centuries focused on the defence of Terra directly, Captain-General Trajann Valoris has sent the Emperor’s bodyguard forth into the galaxy – after all, a threat to the Emperor’s life can originate from anywhere in the Imperium, and with the war for mankind’s survival more desperate than ever, all must fight.

Finally, if you’ve already got a sizeable collection of  Forge World Legio Custodes, rules are on their way for you to use your favourite units in Warhammer 40,000, in addition to the huge range of new plastic kits.

Mes 2 sous:

-Le codex sort très très bientôt. Il pense dans les 2 prochains mois. (very very soon (2 months))

Adeptus Custodes Preview – Part 1: The Heroes

40kCustodes-Banner8hg.jpg

After 10,000 years as the Imperium’s final line of defence, the Adeptus Custodes are marching forth from Terra in force, and thanks to a new codex, you’ll be able to lead them in battle with new units, Stratagems, Relics and much more. In the first of our daily previews this week, we’re looking at one of the most requested additions to the arsenal of the Adeptus Custodes – dedicated HQ units!

Every member of the Adeptus Custodes is a hero in his own right. Each is a veteran of decades or even centuries of warfare, honed by constant training and the greatest wargear and gene-craft the Imperium has to offer. Each is a warrior, statesman, diplomat, historian, philosopher – a true heir to the lineage of the Emperor.

40kCustodes-Jan15-Image5td-419x500.jpg

Some, however, go above and beyond even their enhanced brethren and are given the honour of Shield-Captain – commander of a portion of the strength of the Ten Thousand. Above them lies only the Captain-General, perhaps the most prestigious warrior in the entire Imperium.

40kCustodes-Jan15-Image6qn-451x500.jpg

The new Codex: Adeptus Custodes brings the Golden Legion to life as never seen before, delving deep into the military traditions of these renowned warriors and providing rules for them to match. One of the most requested units for the Adeptus Custodes, following their first release, was a dedicated HQ unit for the army – so we decided to give you four.

40kCustodes-Jan15-Image3ts-500x276.jpg

Every upcoming Adeptus Custodes kit has been cunningly designed so you can also use it to build an HQ option armed with the same wargear as his brethren. This means you’ll be able to take Shield-Captains in inviolate Allarus Terminator armour or mount them on fast-moving Dawneagle jetbikes.

However you choose to equip him, the Shield-Captain has a very impressive statline:

40kCustodes-Jan15-ShieldCaptain2xn-500x1

Strong WS and BS mean these storied champions are unlikely to miss, while Toughness 5 along with 6 Wounds makes them very hard to kill – especially when you factor in their excellent saves. Offensively, you’ll be able to choose from a wide array of wargear, from the classic guardian spear to the new castellan axe, a huge weapon that trades the AP of its predecessor for bonus Strength and idea for cleaving heretics in half. As for the Shield-Captain on Dawneagle jetbike, we’ll be taking a closer look at what these ancient war machines can do later in the week.

Trajann Valoris is the Captain-General of the Adeptus Custodes, making him one of the most powerful military figures in the entire Imperium, charged with defending the Sol System, Terra, and the Imperial Palace. First seen in Chris Wraight’s The Emperor’s Legion, this legendary figure is among the most proactive of the Adeptus Custodes, and is responsible for bringing the Golden Legion into a more aggressive role.

40kCustodes-Jan15-Image4gw-500x438.jpg

On the tabletop, Valoris has a statline and set of wargear and abilities to match his reputation, and is among one of the most powerful commanders any Imperium player can field. Valoris has a similar statline to his brethren, but wields a much stronger weapon in the Watcher’s Axe, an artefact that gives him five Strength 10, AP-3 attacks on the charge, dealing D3 damage apiece. This gets even deadlier when you take Valoris’ Legendary Commander ability into account – any friendly Adeptus Custodes within 6″ of Valoris (including himself!) re-roll hit rolls and wound rolls of 1.

Valoris is also armed with the Moment Shackle, an unusual relic of Dark Age technology which lends him some extra flexibility during your games. Once per battle, you’ll be able to pick a powerful one-time ability for Valoris, from fighting again at the end of a Fight phase to regaining lost Command Points.

40kCustodes-Jan15-MomentShackle1ys.jpg

Whether you’re looking for a particularly powerful bodyguard for your favourite Imperial character, a deadly assassin-type unit or the leader for your own shield company, Codex: Adeptus Custodes is absolutely packed with options – and we haven’t even looked at Warlord Traits, Stratagems or Relics yet…

Come back tomorrow when we’ll look at how the new codex has changed the Custodian Guard, as well as a powerful new ability shared by all of the Adeptus Custodes…

Adeptus Custodes Preview – Part 2: The Troops

40kCustodes-Banner8hg.jpg

After 10,000 years as the Imperium’s final line of defence, the Adeptus Custodes are marching forth from Terra in force, and thanks to a new codex, you’ll be able to lead them in battle with new units, Stratagems, Relics and much more. In the second of our daily previews this week, we’re looking at how the core unit of your army – Custodian Guard – have been improved in the new codex, as well as a powerful rule that applies across your entire Adeptus Custodes army.

Warhammer 40,000 has seen rules for the Adeptus Custodes before, but in the new codex, they’re more than just a collection of units – they’re an interconnected fighting force, rich with potent synergies for those with the cunning to unlock them and a Detachment-wide special rule that significantly rewards the disciplined list builder.

40kCustodes-Jan16-Image6wn.jpg

Firstly, the Aegis of the Emperor has been tweaked to also provide a 6+ additional save against any mortal wounds caused by psychic powers. This is both a thematic change and a practical one, representing the Emperor’s protection of his most cherished servants. It also helps you defend your units against Smite and other attacks that would otherwise cut through your high Toughness and excellent saves.

40kCustodes-Jan16-Aegis1ek.jpg

The Emperor’s Chosen gives every Infantry and Biker unit in a pure Adeptus Custodes Detachment +1 to their invulnerable saves, to a maximum of 3+. In practice, this means that none of your units, including Custodian Guard, will ever have worse than a 4+ invulnerable save. Combine this with the high Toughness and Wounds characteristics of Adeptus Custodes units, and your army just got a lot more durable, particularly against the kind of heavy weapons – lascannons, krak missiles and Dreadnought power fists – that previously presented a more substantial threat to the Adeptus Custodes.

40kCustodes-Jan16-Chosen2qh.jpg

The second part of the Adeptus Custodes Detachment rules is less immediately powerful, but still invaluable change to the army. As you may know, with Chapter Approved and every codex so far, most Troops in the game gain some version of Objective Secured, giving them scoring priority over units without the rule. Under the current rules, the Adeptus Custodes have struggled to score objectives compared to more armies with a higher model count, unable to cover every objective at once and without the necessary squad size to outnumber other units. All that is about to change…

40kCustodes-Jan16-Guardians3gw.jpg

All Infantry and Bikers in the Adeptus Custodes army gain Sworn Guardians, meaning whether or not they’re Troops, they’ll count as controlling an objective marker if the enemy doesn’t have any units with similar rules or more models. In practice, you’ll still have to work hard to neutralise your opponents’ Troops choices, but your Terminator-armoured Allarus Custodians and jetbike-mounted Vertus Praetors will be able to dive deep into enemy lines and secure objectives, while your Custodian Guard are under much less pressure to race to critical battlefield locations.

Custodian Guard themselves have received a variety of discreet improvements in the new codex. For one, they’re now BS 2+, allowing them to get a little more out of their surprisingly powerful attacks with their Guardian Spears. For another, they can now be taken in units of three, meaning if you build a Vexilla and a Shield Captain out of your Custodes set, you’ll still be able to build a playable unit with the remaining models. Finally, the Custodian Guard combine superbly with some of the new Stratagems in the book, particularly Piercing Strike, which makes wounding larger foes much easier.

40kCustodes-Jan16-Piercing5kx.jpg

It’s something of a tradition of the Adeptus Custodes to deliver golden death from the doors of an equally golden Land Raider. From Golden Light They Come, on the other hand, opens up new deployment options for your Custodian Guard, as well as other units in your army.

40kCustodes-Jan16-GoldenLight4rs.jpg

However you build your Adeptus Custodes army, the new codex is packed with benefits for your army. If you’re yet to start an Adeptus Custodes force, the Talons of the Emperor boxed set is a great way to do it, while if you want to learn more, we’ll have an in-depth preview tomorrow of what the new codex means for the war machines of the Adeptus Custodes – including the new Vertus Praetors.

Adeptus Custodes Preview Part 3: War Machines

40kCustodes-Banner8hg.jpg

After 10,000 years as the Imperium’s final line of defence, the Adeptus Custodes are marching forth from Terra in force, and thanks to a new codex, you’ll be able to lead them in battle with new units, Stratagems, Relics and much more. In the third of our daily previews this week, we’re looking at the war machines of the Adeptus Custodes, including the Dawneagle jetbikes and the Vertus Praetors who ride them.

Vertus Praetors hearken back to the same ancient, martial traditions that guide the Adeptus Custodes, mirroring the heavy cavalry employed by human armies since the very dawn of time. The technology may have advanced, but the principle is still the same – range ahead of the main body of the force and devastate the foe with crushing lance charges.

40kCustodes-Jan17-Vertus1hw.jpg

On the tabletop, Vertus Praetors are the fastest moving elements of the Adeptus Custodes army, boasting a 14″ move, Fly, and a straight boost of 6″ when they Advance without having to roll.

Where the Vertus Praetors really shine is in their weaponry, helping provide some much-needed anti-armour ability to the Adeptus Custodes army. While you’re free to build yours with hurricane bolters, we’re fans of the new salvo launcher, a missile weapon that can adjust its firing profile based on target. The flakkburst missile allows you to shoot Flyers out of the sky (or soften them up for a particularly bold lance charge), while the melta missile deals hefty damage to any vehicles

40kCustodes-Jan17-SalvoLauncher2uf-500x1

Should anyone survive your ranged onslaught, interceptor lances are also brutally effective weapons:

40kCustodes-Jan17-Lance3ys-500x65.jpg

By combining these guys with a nearby Shield-Captain on Dawneagle Jetbike (buildable using the same kit!) you’ll be able to grab objectives and hunt down choice enemy units with ease.

With the Stooping Dive Stratagem, you’ll be able to make defensive use of your Vertus Praetors too, by unleashing a deadly counter-charge upon your foes.

40kCustodes-Jan17-Dive4ha.jpg

Meanwhile, existing Adeptus Custodes vehicles can benefit from a range of new Stratagems, as well as the helpful presence of a nearby Shield-Captain. Venerable Land Raiders are already unbelievably accurate – form a firebase with a commander nearby, and use the Networked Machine Spirits Stratagem, and you’ll be able to deal with tricky targets like Flyers with ease.

40kCustodes-Jan17-Network6hk.jpg

Wisdom of the Ancients, meanwhile, allows you to use your Venerable Contemptor Dreadnoughts to bolster the abilities of nearby units:

40kCustodes-Jan17-Wisdom5tf.jpg

However you build your new Adeptus Custodes army – a slow-moving armoured column, a legion of Dreadnoughts, or a rapid-strike detachment of Vertus Praetors – you’ll find a range of potent and versatile options to help you out. Come back tomorrow when we’ll be checking out even more new units with a closer look at the Elites of the Adeptus Custodes.

Adeptus Custodes Preview Part 3: The Elites

40kCustodes-Banner8hg.jpg

After 10,000 years as the Imperium’s final line of defence, the Adeptus Custodes are marching forth from Terra in force, and thanks to a new codex, you’ll be able to lead them in battle with new units, Stratagems, Relics and much more. In today’s preview, we’re looking at the elite infantry of the Adeptus Custodes, from the stalwart Custodian Wardens to the bellicose Allarus Custodians.

Every member of the Adeptus Custodes is a hero in their own right, but there are some that go above and beyond even the deeds expected of them. These veterans combine the training of their brethren with centuries of battlefield experience, each often centuries older than even the most venerable of Space Marines, and well versed in the practice as well as the theory of warfare.

40kCustodes-Jan18-Wardens2nw.jpg

Custodian Wardens may, at first glance, appear very similar to Custodian Guard, and indeed, these elite warriors perform much the same role as their brethren, but with some added benefits. The first of these is Binding Oaths, a special rule that further boosts the durability of a unit that is already very hard to kill.

40kCustodes-Jan18-BindingOaths4ns.jpg

Custodian Wardens can also be equipped with castellan axes, deadly melee weapons that aren’t quite as effective at piercing armour as the guardian spear, but provide a massive +3 boost to the wielder’s Strength! If you’re looking to hunt more lightly-armoured monsters, or even vehicles, these weapons are ideal, and work well with the Custodian Wardens’ increased number of attacks.

40kCustodes-Jan18-Allarus1yq.jpg.jpg

Allarus Custodians, on the other hand, are relentless Character hunters. Encased in Allarus Terminator armour, these warriors have 4 Wounds apiece and can teleport onto the battlefield, allowing them to close in in close combat very quickly indeed. What’s more, the Slayers of Tyrants rule means you can keep edging closer to your opponent’s key Characters when you pile in and consolidate:

40kCustodes-Jan18-TyrantSlayers5lz.jpg

This ability works superbly with the Inescapable Vengeance Stratagem, which allows your Allarus Custodians to snipe key enemy Characters with their guardian spears or castellan axes as well as their balistus grenade launchers, potent ranged weapons which excel at piercing armour.

40kCustodes-Jan18-Vengeance9sf.jpg

One of the most enjoyable Stratagems to use with the Allarus Custodians, however, has to be Unleash the Lions. The Adeptus Custodes are renowned for the independence on the battlefield – where the Space Marines fight like a pack of wolves, working in concert with one another to bring down their foes, the Adeptus Custodes fight more like individual warriors. This Stratagem lets you split your Allarus Custodians into separate units, each behaving as a lone warrior for the remainder of the battlefield. If you’re looking for a particularly fun and thematic army, you could take a unit of 10, teleport them into battle, and assassinate a key enemy character before splitting up into different groups to hunt down the enemy.

40kCustodes-Jan18-Lions8eh.jpg

The armies of the Adeptus Custodes have also received new support options in the form of Vexilus Praetors. These warriors bear the standards of the Adeptus Custodes into battle, designed not just to inspire those who fight around them, but infused with mysterious crypto-technological abilities that aid both the Golden Legion and the Imperial forces that fight alongside them.

40kCustodes-Jan18-Vexilla3rb.jpg

In game, Vexilus Praetors are an Elites choice that can be equipped with one of three different standards:

40kCustodes-Jan18-Standards7cg.jpg

If you’re looking to build a long-ranged army, the Vexilla Magnifica makes your Adeptus Custodes units even more durable, while close assault forces will love the Vexilla Imperius. Finally, the Vexilla Defensor is ideal for mixed Imperium armies, allowing you to provide protection to nearby models – perfect for shoring up an Intercessor gunline, or shielding some otherwise vulnerable Astra Militarum infantry.

Chances are, you may already have a Vexilus Praetor in your army! The Custodian Wardens, Allarus Custodians and Custodian Guard kit contain everything you need to build a Vexilus Praetor and a Shield-Captain. Indeed, the Custodian Guard set is almost a Start Collecting! Set for the Adeptus Custodes, containing a Patrol Detachment in a single box weighing in at about 22 power.

With these new units on hand, the Adeptus Custodes army is about to get a lot more diverse, whether you’re fielding them as an army in their own right or as allies for your Imperium army.

Come back tomorrow, when we’ll be diving into some of the particularly interesting Stratagems in the new Adeptus Custodes codex.

Adeptus Custodes Preview Part 5: Stratagems

40kCustodes-Banner8hg.jpg

After 10,000 years as the Imperium’s final line of defence, the Adeptus Custodes are marching forth from Terra in force, and thanks to a new codex, you’ll be able to lead them in battle with new units, Stratagems, Relics and much more. In today’s preview, we’re checking out the cunning tricks you’ll be able to play on your opponents with the new Adeptus Custodes Stratagems.

While the martial might of the Adeptus Custodes is legendary, it’s not just wargear or training that makes them a terrifying force on the battlefield, but their strategic genius. Each member of the Adeptus Custodes is a honed statesman and commander, sharpened by psycho-indoctrination, careful study of history and the constant oversight of one of the most important military operations in the Imperium – the continued defence of Terra from threats both without and within.

NYOpenDay-Jan6-CustArmyshot2ywn.jpg

Thanks to the new Codex: Adeptus Custodes, you’ll be able to represent this tactical mastery with no fewer than 27 Stratagems, providing new opportunities for matched play gamers to outsmart their foes, giving narrative fans thematic ways to roleplay with their army and even offering a sneaky reference or two to Rogue Trader…

The Tanglefoot Grenade is a new Stratagem representing one of Warhammer 40,000’s oldest pieces of wargear. Back in the day, grenades and missiles could bear a dizzying array of payloads, with tanglefoot ammunition being one of them. These have been re-canonised as ancient relics in the new Codex: Adeptus Custodes, and a pretty handy one at that – whether you’re trying to wreck an enemy charge or stop a particular target getting away, you’ll find them very useful indeed.

40kCustodes-Jan19-Tanglefoot1tx.jpg

Concussion Grenades are another returning relic from Rogue Trader, designed to work with the Allarus Custodians. Use them before charging into combat and you’ll be able to neutralise your opponent’s most dangerous units

Of course, with an elite army like the Adeptus Custodes, you’ll be very vulnerable should you start taking casualties, but thankfully, the Stratagems in the book contain several ways to overcome this. One combination in the book we particularly like is following Even in Death – which allows your Custodians to attack after they’re slain – with Shoulder the Mantle – which allows you to nominate a new character in your army as the Warlord. By doing so, you’ll be able to deny your enemy the crucial Slay the Warlord secondary objective in most missions while doing some damage on your way out.

Meanwhile, for your larger units, the Avenge the Fallen Stratagem allows any unit your opponent has decided to focus on in any given Fight phase to hit back, and hard.

As befits an army that fights alongside the wider Imperium, acting as bodyguards or agents to other Imperial figures, there are tools in the codex to support mixed armies too. If you’re fielding an Astra Militarum army, for instance, you’ll find a nearby unit of Custodian Guard a valuable source of some extra morale thanks to the Avatars of the Emperor Stratagem.

Between the new Stratagems and units, the armies of the Adeptus Custodes offer surprising tactical depth to the canny general, making them a rewarding choice for the cerebral player. Come back tomorrow for our final preview, where we’ll be checking out the various Warlord Traits and Relics you’ll be able to use to customise your Adeptus Custodes Characters…
