Battletome Preview – Blades of Khorne: Big Changes

AoSKhorneChanges-Mar12-Header22ye.jpg

This weekend, the servants of the Blood God can pre-order a shiny new battletome! Today, we’ll be covering some of the major changes found within, including updated warscrolls, new mechanics and more. If you want to see what your Khorne army has to look forward to, or you’ve never played Khorne but you’re curious to start harvesting skulls in his name, read on…

Blood Tithe

Blood Tithe remains as excellent as it has always been – every time a unit dies (friend or foe!), you gain a Blood Tithe point that can be spent on powerful, one-off abilities or summoned Daemons. This time around, some Blood Tithe costs have been tweaked and new abilities added. Bloody Exemplar, for instance, is a great way to grab another command point in a pinch.

Manage to get 8 Blood Tithe points, and you’ll be richly rewarded with Slaughter Triumphant, a horrifically powerful bonus that applies for the whole battle once it has been chosen! This is a particularly good one to pick after your enemy has doubled-turned you, allowing you to shift the momentum of the game back in your favour.

Locus of Fury

Khorne Daemons are excellent  but, as everyone who’s lined up a devastating attack with Skarbrand only to see every blow from his fearsome axe Slaughter fail to connect can attest to, they can sometimes struggle with to hit rolls. Locus of Fury, a new allegiance ability for Khorne armies, should help with this considerably.

Slaughterhosts

Slaughterhosts are Khornate sub-factions representing the most legendary armies sworn to the Blood God’s name. When building your army, you’ll have the option of adding a Slaughterhost keyword to every model in your force, rewarding you with an ability, command ability, command trait and artefact of power.

These are great for narrative players looking to recreate their favourite armies, such as Korghos Khul’s Goretide, as well as those looking to make the most out of more niche strategies and units. The Skullfiend Tribe, for example, rewards you for taking a mighty campaigning force supported by lots of Khorgoraths.

Another Slaughterhost we love is the Reapers of Vengeance. These guys hate wizards so much, they make the rest of Khorne’s followers look positively tolerant of magic users, dragging those who would cower behind dishonourable sorcery to perpetual torments in the realm of the Blood God. On the tabletop, the Reapers of Vengeance get a deadly command trait that allows you to unbind spells to potentially devastating effect.

Warscroll Updates

Battletome: Blades of Khorne sees a number of Khornate warscroll updates, ensuring that every unit works as effectively as possible. Some, like Skullreapers, have been simplified, making for faster, cleaner play. A number of others have been enhanced with powerful new abilities and profile tweaks  here are a few of our favourites.

Skarbrand

Skarbrand  could he be any more awesome? Well, yes  this exceptionally angry Greater Daemon can now deal 16 mortal wounds with his legendary axe, Carnage. You won’t even need to roll to hit anymore, making for a simpler (and deadlier) attack sequence that has the potential to destroy even a Lord-Celestant on Stardrake in a single blow!

Mighty Skullcrushers

Mighty Skullcrushers make for some of the scariest heavy cavalry in the game. As well as having been granted more attacks, these guys deal a terrifying deluge of mortal wounds on the charge, with a unit of 6 dealing as many as 6D3! Roll well, and you could well remove an Abhorrant Ghoul King on Royal Terrorgheist before you’ve swung any weapons…

Skulltaker

As you’d expect, Skulltaker is really, really good at taking skulls. On the tabletop, this guy remains an excellent slayer of Heroes, coupling devastating damage with the excellent Decapitating Strike ability.

What’s more, he’s also been given a nifty command ability that makes nearby Bloodletters hit even harder  combine him with a Bloodmaster, Herald of Khorne, and you’ll be able to transform them into a veritable Khornate blender…

What A Blades of Khorne Army Looks Like

In the new battletome, more Blades of Khorne army builds are valid than ever before. Perhaps you’ll field a frothing horde of barbarian Bloodreavers, driven into battle by a cadre of Slaughterpriests. Perhaps you’ll dedicate your favourite Slaves to Darkness army with the Mark of Khorne and combine the updated allegiance abilities with favourite units like Chaos Knights. Or maybe you’ll try something more unusual – like a hunting pack of Flesh Hounds, infernal gathering of Bloodthirsters, or a crushing tide of Mighty Skullcrushers – it’s up to you!

We’ll be back later in the week with a look at how you can start your Khorne army, plus a closer look at the Judgements of Khorne and the Skull Altar – so stay tuned! In the meantime, kick off your army with the Goreblade Warband Start Collecting! set.

Blades of Khorne Preview: Judgements of Khorne and the Skull Altar

AoSKhorneChanges-Mar12-Header22ye.jpg

We’ve seen the new models, we’ve checked out the battletome, and now we’ve got yet another in-depth preview for Khorne fans! Today, we’re revealing the full warscrolls for the new Judgements of Khorne and the Skull Altar, and looking at why they’re a must-have in your lists…

AoSKhorneJudgements-battleshot1ebf.jpg

How Judgements of Khorne Work

Broadly speaking, Judgements of Khorne are very similar to endless spells – you’ll summon them into battle, at which point they’ll have a range of ongoing effects.

Judgements of Khorne are brought into battle by Slaughterpriests using a judgement roll. This means that they can be a little more difficult to summon than endless spells, but your opponents won’t be able to unbind them. Similarly, one of the handy things about not being a spell is it’s impossible to dispel a Judgement of Khorne. Instead, they have a fixed chance to disappear at the end of each turn, modified by the presence of a nearby Slaughterpriest.

AoSKhorneJudgements-Judgements2xhe.jpg

This makes Judgements of Khorne difficult for your enemy to work around or counter, and they are particularly nightmarish for Wizards

The Hexgorger Skulls

We’ve all been there  you rock up to your gaming night with your Khorne army and end up facing the sorcerous wrath of the Legions of Nagash, Sacrosanct Stormcast Eternals or Disciples of Tzeentch, and Khorne is demanding that these cowardly, duplicitous magic users be shown the error of their ways. That’s where the Hexgorger Skulls come in. These make casting much harder for nearby Wizards, and can even cause them to forget spells entirely!

AoSKhorneJudgements-Mar13-HexgorgerSkull

The Bleeding Icon

Khorne is known for many things, but subtlety is not one of them. Sure, there are more cunning ways to smash your foes  but dropping a massive, blood-soaked block of brass on them from the Realm of Chaos beats all of them on style alone. The Bleeding Icon allows you to crush enemies and makes failed battleshock tests even worse, pairing excellently with the bravery-reducing Khorgorath or a Khorne-marked Chaos Knights.

AoSKhorneJudgements-Mar13-BleedingIconWa

The Wrath-Axe

Who needs magic when you can fling an interdimensional axe at someone? The Wrath-Axe is a straightforward Judgement of Khorne that deals mortal wounds to your enemies, then deals some more, then reduces your foes’ hit rolls, then spits at them to add insult to injury. (We may have made that last one up.)

AoSKhorneJudgements-Mar13-WrathAxeWarscr

The Skull Altar

AoSKhorneJudgements-Altar3hfd.jpg

Skull Altars are dread monuments raised by the servants of Khorne in veneration of their gory master. In-game, the Skull Altar is available to your Khorne army for no matched play points and lets your Slaughterpriests re-roll prayer and judgement rolls when they’re nearby! This allows you to ensure a key Blood Blessing goes off and that you can deliver the Wrath-Axe to your enemy’s face with greater reliability. It’ll also further disrupt enemy Wizards, so if you pair it with the Hexgorger Skulls, it’ll be incredibly hard for sorcerers of all stripes to even use the most meagre of spells against you. We can already hear the Blood God laughing…

AoSKhorneJudgements-Mar13-SkullAltarWars

The Judgements of Khorne and the Skull Altar will be available to pre-order this weekend, alongside Battletome: Blades of Khorne and plenty of daemonic reinforcements. In the meantime, if you’re looking to make use of your Judgements of Khorne, we’d recommend grabbing a Slaughterpriest or two!
