Aeronautica Imperialis is a game of tactics, reaction, and skill. It’s also a game where many problems can be solved through the brutal, sudden and overwhelming application of firepower. Which is where the Eavy Bommers come in!

The cunnin’ spawn of a Marauder Bomber and a Stompa, Eavy Bommers are massive flying fortresses armed with a brutal amount of dakka. May the Emperor help any who find themselves in either of its side fire arcs…

With plenty of options for customisation, this kit allows you to build two Eavy Bommers, with a vast variety of potential designs. We’ll be giving you some top tips on using the ‘Eavy Bommers next week, so stay tuned…

Aeronautica Imperialis: Eavy Bommer Tactica

Aeronautica-Aug25-Header20ys.jpg

Your Air Waaagh! will never be the same once your Eavy Bommers take to the skies. Despite the name, they’re useful for all sorts of things besides just bombing your targets into oblivion. Take a look at our top tips and suggestions for utilising these beefy bombers in your games.

What makes Eavy Bommers special?

They’ve Got Huge BOMBS

This probably seems obvious, but hear us out. Any Fighta Bommer or even Dakkajet can take some bombs as extra weapons, but a dedicated bomber has a couple of advantages (which we’ll get to shortly). An Eavy Bommer has one set of bombs built right into its base profile, and you can add up to three sets of smaller wing bombs or two pairs of big bombs. That gives you up to four rounds of ground-pounding per plane, dropping four to six Firepower dice each time, while still firing your other guns. Speaking of which…

They Pack Loads of DAKKA

These things BRISTLE with guns! Let’s break it down: at level Altitude and close range it can dish out up to 7 Firepower to the front arc, 9 to each side, and even 3 to the rear. The turrets and big shootas also provide reliable mid-range firepower with 4 to the front, 5 to the sides or 2 to the rear – much better than other planes in the Air Waaagh! Any enemy planes attempting to swarm you will hesitate to engage Eavy Bommers, especially if you keep a couple close together to support each other.

They’re TOUGH

There are two kinds of Orks in the galaxy – quick and stabby, or shooty and tough. The rest of your fleet is more like the former, whilst Eavy Bommers are very much the latter. With the highest Structure Points in the game – 6 of them to be exact – you’re all but guaranteed to survive long enough for a couple of solid bombing runs. If not, at least you know your enemy had to throw obscene amounts of firepower your way to take each Eavy Bommer down. Spend just 2 points to add an Extra Armour upgrade – ignoring damage on a 6 – for a good laugh.

How to Get the Most from Eavy Bommers

Bombs Away!

Setting up a Bombing Run in Aeronautica Imperialis is a useful skill to master. Not only do bombs ‘fire’ in your Rear arc (plus directly below you), they’re also affected differently by Altitude. A Bombing Run at Altitude 1, for example, means all four to six of your dice will hit on a 4+, whilst bombing from levels even as high as 3 will typically still hit on a 6. Never forget that the rest of your guns can still shoot even when you perform a Bombing Run!

The Best Tool for the Job

As the only plane in the Air Waaagh! with a transport capacity, and the only Bomber class aircraft (the Fighta Bommer is more fighta than bommer), you’ll need the Eavy Bommer to take part in some types of Scenarios. The slow-and-steady role is more suited to some missions over others, so let’s break down its usefulness in both the ‘attacker’ and ‘defender’ roles:

Watch Your Six

Imperial Navy planes are deadly at medium range, and since your Eavy Bommers are rather slow and clumsy, you may find yourself with a tail more often than you like. Your dorsal turret will help a bit – just make sure they don’t fly lower than you, since it can only fire on the same or higher Altitude! Circle the faster elements of your fleet back to support you when you’re threatened, or prioritise high-threat targets like Marauder Bombers and Thunderbolt Furies that are able to strip your Structure Points quickly.

Eavy Bommers are a Game Changer

There’s a certain purity to running an aggressive Air Waaagh! roster. It’s brutally effective – just fly straight at ‘em and unload with buckets of dice. Eavy Bommers transform your fleet into something different – kunnin’, yet brutal. They excel at sticking around through resistance that might take out lighter elements of your fleet, with the added flexibility of more bombs and Transport 2. In order to use them effectively, you’ll have to put a little more thought into how to get the various elements of your fleet to work together.

Grotz Wiv Wingz

We’ve been hinting about the Grot Bommer for a while now, but this hotly anticipated addition to the Ork Air Waaagh! has just made its first appearance.

A variation of the Eavy Bommer, it has the honour of being the first aircraft equipped with Autonomous Weapons – once dropped, their Grot Bombs have an increased degree of control over traditional payloads, in addition to being utterly devastating! If you look closely, you can even see the tiny Grot pilots that guide the munitions ensconced within the ‘cockpits’ of each bomb…

You can look forward to adding these powerful aircraft to your Ork skwadrons soon. If you haven’t already picked up a copy of Rynn’s World Air War Campaign Book, grab one today, and check out the rules for Autonomous Weapons.

Who let the Grots out?

Whether they’re coming to reinforce your Air Waaagh! or wreak havoc for your Imperial Navy wings, there’s no question these high-flying Gretchin are set to bring a tactical twist to Aeronautica Imperialis.

The box builds not only two Grot Bommer planes, which are similar at first glance to Eavy Bommers, as well as four free-flying Grot Bomms – tiny aeroplanes packed with explosives, piloted by thrill-seeking Gretchin! These are like nothing else currently in the game, and though they’re fun and wacky, your opponents will swiftly come to fear them.

Grot Bomms Awaaay!

Aeronautica-Aug25-Header20ys.jpg

Buckle up – we’re expecting some turbulence as the Grots of the Air Waaagh! scramble for their 15 seconds of fame. Come to think of it, is the timing a coincidence or did Da Red Gobbo inspire them?*

What Exactly Are Grot Bommers?

The name refers not to the pilots or crew of these ponderous potbelly planes, but rather their payload. Hitched to the bottom of the broad wings are massive bombs with stubby little stabiliser wings. It’s not until they drop that you catch a glimpse of a fluttering scarf, the glint of the sun off tiny goggles and a bulbous green nose peeking out from a tiny cockpit – an aspiring Gretchin pilot is in for the ride of their, er… rather short life. Hey, at least they’re wearing tiny helmets! Safety first, as they say.

f33117e1.jpg

You’d be doing them a disservice if you thought about Grot Bommers as nothing more than bomb delivery systems. Like any Ork plane worth its rust, they’re packing proppa dakka – 8 shots from the Quad Big Shootas alone, not to mention the two turrets. Plus, they’ve got a whopping 6 Structure Points and a Transport Capacity of 3 which is the highest in the game so far – how do you think those Stormboyz make it to battle, anyway?

The Mekaniks down at Forge World like Grot Bomms so much, they decided to create a special Scenario just to showcase them! It includes all of the rules for Grot Bommers, Eavy Bommers and, as a fun optional perk, you can upgrade one of the Gretchin pilots to Rudok Redz, using the free card from the November issue of White Dwarf.**

94a63f30-330x240.jpg

Don’t get caught laughing at those adorable Grot Bomms. The Autonomous Weapon rule (included in the download) means they fly on their own once released. When they catch their quarry and successfully detonate, they cause damage on a 2+, plus Extra Damage on a 4 or better! Who’s laughing now, huh?

You’ll want to spend the 8 points to double your payload from 2 to 4 Grot Bomms. It might not be a cheap upgrade, but it’s worth every precious point, since they’re (ironically) some of the most reliable damage dealers in the entire game.

While superficially similar in shape, these planes are very different from the Eavy Bommers you already know and love. Using the two together will ensure a kunnin’ yet brutal Air Waaagh! that will be tough for your opponents to deal with. Take a look at our Eavy Bommer Tactica article from a little while back to brush up on some tips and tricks.

Luckily for you, Grot Bommers are available to pre-order right now, so you don’t have long to wait to reinforce your fleet. Now get out there and krump some ‘umies!

* He totally did.
** The link to Da Red Gobbo is obvious now, right?
