O’Shaserra, better known as Commander Shadowsun, is getting an awesome new model!

Her newly up-gunned battlesuit now comes equipped as standard with an arsenal of weapons, from a flechette launcher to light missile pod, and the choice of tank-busting high-energy fusion blasters or Space Marine-melting dispersed fusion blasters. Shadowsun is also accompanied by her trusty pair of high-tech drones which bring with them a suite of handy tactical abilities.

5ef6a423.jpg

Best of all, as befits this iconic hero of the empire, she can now lead any Sept, not just those of her homeworld, so she can take command of any T’au Empire collection***. We think she’ll look right at home at the head of a strike force of Stealth Suits and Ghostkeels.

Shadowsun drops in alongside the release of book 5 of Psychic Awakening, titled “The Greater Good”, but we’ll have to wait a little bit longer before we find out who the T’au will be up against.

Psychic Awakening: Ritual of the Damned

The next chapter of the unfurling Psychic Awakening saga is almost here. Ritual of the Damned tells the tale of Magnus and the Thousand Sons, who seek to use the infernal energies unleashed by the Great Rift to further their own diabolical plans. They’re opposed by both the Dark Angels Chapter of Space Marines and the elite Daemon-hunting Grey Knights.

This 88-page book is packed with new background material for all three factions, plus loads of new rules for each of them. There’s a lot to unpack, so keep an eye* out this week as we take a closer look at the updates. Ritual of the Damned will be available in standard hardback and eBook editions.

As with the rest of the series, you’ll also be able to order a beautiful collector’s edition, including 16 extra pages with four short stories** and additional artwork, plus the soft-touch cover with wrap-around art, black page edges and a ribbon bookmark. Show your allegiance to Tzeentch or to the secretive soldiers of the Dark Angels and Grey Knights with this impressive tome.

The forces of the Dark Angels are bolstered not only by the new rules in the book but by Master Lazarus, Primaris Captain of the 5th Company. He’s crossed the Rubicon Primaris but still looks every bit a Dark Angel in his new armour, surveying the battlefield with a withering gaze, his winged helm in one hand and his sword, Enmity’s Edge, in the other.

You can also build this model as a Primaris Master, armed with a bolt carbine with special issue ammunition and a power fist, including a helmeted option and a bare head with a bionic eye.

Due to what we can only assume is meddling by Cypher, Master Lazarus’ matched play points aren’t available in Ritual of the Damned – but worry not, you can see them right here!

The Greater Good is the latest book in the Psychic Awakening series, focusing on the ambitious T’au Empire, stalwart Astra Militarum and Ordo Tempestus, and insidious Genestealer Cults. You’ll find new rules, Relics, Warlord Traits and Stratagems for all four factions, wrapped in a thrilling story exploring a sprawling war that leaves them all paranoid and reeling. We’ll dig deeper into each of these factions, so keep an eye out for more information later this week.

The Greater Good will be available as a standard hardback and eBook, plus a darkly beautiful collector’s edition with a soft-touch embossed cover, black page edges and ribbon bookmark.

Whether you order the standard hardback or the collector’s edition, we’ll throw in a set of datasheet cards for Commander Shadowsun and The Eight – they’re back, and more amazing than ever! Don’t hesitate to pre-order your book, because the cards are only available while stocks last.

Speaking of Shadowsun, O’Shaserra leads the Fifth Sphere Expansion, rocking an upgraded XV22 Stalker Battlesuit! This suit is positively bristling with weapons, and she’s also accompanied by MV37 Advanced Guardian and MV62 Command-link Drones.

This model is loaded to the gills with cool details, and a choice of three different heads, including a half-helmeted version.

The Genestealer Cults are also getting some reinforcements of their own, in the form of a new Start Collecting! set.

The Start Collecting! Genestealer Cults box is stuffed with models, including Acolytes (including an Iconward), Neophytes and an Achilles Ridgerunner. If you’re thinking about throwing in your lot with the uprising, or you want to swell the ranks of your ongoing rebellion, this box is essential. Of course, they could use an inspirational figure to help with recruiting… Perhaps a legendary gunfighter? Enter the Kelermorph!

Previously found in the Starn’s Disciples box for Warhammer 40,000: Kill Team, this three-armed shootist will soon be available separately to assassinate enemy leaders and inspire nearby cultists to greater acts of fervour.

What is the Psychic Awakening?

PsyAwk-Sep09-PAHeader-zlw2-1.jpg

The Psychic Awakening is big news for all Warhammer 40,000 fans. We’re already five books into this epic saga, but if you’ve been hitting snooze on the psychic alarm clock, we’re here to explain what the Psychic Awakening is and why it’s important for you and your army.

The Background

The Great Rift cut the galaxy in half, but it took some time until the aetheric phenomena that accompanied the Cicatrix Maledictum was fully felt. Now, as the psychic power seeps into realspace, humans across the Imperium are beginning to discover their psychic potential. Simultaneously, the enemies of Humanity are hearing the psychic call to war.

PAMinisite-Sep05-Map-1ux8.jpg

This upheaval has fuelled the internal strife of the various Aeldari factions as the craftworlders, Drukhari and Ynarri have come to blows. The power of the hive mind has grown, and the Tyranids have run rampant over the Baal System as an untold number of Genestealer Cults have also sprung up across the Imperium. Even the T’au Empire, a race with no psykers, have had to confront the horrors of the warp as never before, as the Fifth Sphere Expansion ventures deeper into an inhospitable galaxy.

The biggest threat to the Imperium are the resurgent armies of Chaos. They move openly across realspace, and among them are the Thousand Sons, led by their Daemon Primarch Magnus the Red. He plans to carve out a psychic empire, rebuild the glory of fallen Prospero and usher Mankind into a future as a psychic race.*

In addition to the devastation caused by the forces of Chaos, there are many other ongoing battles that centre around blackstone, also known as noctilith. This psycho-active material enhances or suppresses psychic phenomena and is in great demand by both xenos and Humanity (especially the Adeptus Mechanicus, at the urging of Belisarius Cawl). The full properties of this mysterious substance are only now becoming apparent, and possession of enough blackstone could lead to the galaxy’s salvation. Or its doom…

And that’s not all. There is one other massive threat growing across the entire galaxy – perhaps in response to a growing psychic call, Ork migration is reaching unprecedented numbers. More than that, they’re showing coordination and purpose not seen in many millennia.

Each of the Psychic Awakening books explores a wide variety of war zones and galactic phenomena in great detail, focusing on the different factions.

Rules

The Psychic Awakening books act as a codex update for your armies. Over the course of the saga, every Warhammer 40,000 faction will gain access to new rules. So far, we’ve already seen a host of new army-wide abilities, build-your-own sub-faction rules, extra Stratagems, psychic powers** and more.

The Aeldari, Chaos Space Marines, Tyranids, Thousand Sons, Genestealer Cults, T’au Empire, Astra Militarum and a whole host of Space Marines Chapters have all seen new rules, and more are on the way.

The Future

The next book in the ongoing narrative, The Saga of the Beast, follows the rise of the Ork threat across the galaxy. With Imperial forces already stretched to the limit, the Space Wolves have taken an oath to slay the leader of this massive Waaagh! Of course, the Imperium has a pretty mixed history when it comes to taking out so-called beasts. Can the sons of Fenris manage to stop the green tide before it swallows the Imperium whole?

Whether you love your lore or you’re looking for new ways to field your armies on the battlefields of the 41st Millennium, this an exciting time to be a Warhammer 40,000 fan. If you’ve not already, delve into the Psychic Awakening by picking up the first book, Phoenix Rising and check out the Psychic Awakening site for an interactive map, along with all of the latest news and fiction from this galaxy-spanning saga.

* And Magnus couldn’t have any ulterior motive, could he?
** Well, it IS the Psychic Awakening.

Da Gatherin’ Waaagh!

PsyAwk-Sep09-PAHeader-zlw2-1.jpg

As Gork’s Grin* spreads across the galaxy, the Orks are taking full advantage of the opportunities for fightin’, krumpin’ and smashin’! But the Orks appear weirdly organised. Wot the zog is goin’ on?

4eb8508e.jpg

Da Past

There have been Ork Waaagh!s this big and disciplined twice before in the history of the Imperium. The first time was in M31, where Urlakk Urg’s Waaagh!, centred around Ullanor, threatened human space. It took Horus himself to bring down Urg, with the Luna Wolves Primarch battling the giant Ork in his own throne room before casting the body down from the battlements. In the wake of victory, Horus was named Warmaster of the Emperor’s forces, and nothing was the same ever again.

2d6cfde4.jpg

Some two thousand years later, an even bigger Ork led an even bigger Waaagh! against the Imperium. After colonising Ullanor, this Warboss, known only as the Beast, turned his vengeance on those who had slain Urg, almost wiping out the Imperial Fists Chapter, going toe to toe with Vulkan, the Primarch of the Salamanders, and unleashing one of his attack moons over Terra itself. Billions died, entire sectors were overrun and the Waaagh! was so powerful that the Orks under the command of the Beast grew bigger and more aggressive than any seen before. Eventually, only a desperate gambit on the world of Ullanor by the rebuilt Imperial Fists and the Sisters of Silence managed to end the largest Waaagh! ever seen.

Da Present

All over the galaxy, the Orks are appearing in massive numbers, from Ceibhal to Leckides and from Gaivos to Brakhutos. Attacks on the Imperium have increased in both frequency and intensity. What’s more, these attacks are showing an un-Orky level of tactics and strategy, rather than just rushing headlong into the enemy. Whoever is commanding these Orks is an innovator and shrewd tactician, outmanoeuvring his enemies to exploit their weaknesses and avoiding carefully laid traps as if anticipating them in advance.

6f760b3f.jpg

Wotz ’appenin’?

Who’s in charge of all of these Orks then? Surely it can’t be just one Warboss teleporting around to all of these different war zones, can it? Orks don’t have that technology! Maybe it’s a lot of different Orks, all pretending to be the next “Beast”, and a lot of names are being mentioned in relation to these stunt doubles – Wazdakka Gutsmek, Nazdreg Ug Urdgrub, Urgok the Unstoppable, the Arch-arsonist of Charadon and many more besides. But none of these Orks is kunnin’ enough to put together a Waaagh! of this size. The only thing for certain is that whenever this Beast has been spotted, he’s not been alone – he’s always accompanied by a Grot banner waver…

c2f6216b.jpg

You can find out exactly what the Orks are up to as Saga of the Beast, the next chapter of Psychic Awakening, is released soon. In the meantime, pick up The Beast Arises Volume 1 from Black Library to learn all about the original Beast and how he terrorised the Imperium in M32.

* Dat’s da Great Rift to you ‘umies.

Délottage de Blood of the Phoenix en précommande la semaine prochaine :

https://www.warhammer-community.com/2020/02/23/sunday-preview-incubi-banshees-and-black-library-celebration/

Citation

If you’ve been patiently waiting to escalate the internecine warfare of the Aeldari race, listen up… The new models from the Blood of the Phoenix box will be available to pre-order from this Saturday! We’ve also got a bunch of new fiction on the way in the lead up to the Black Library Celebration on the 29th of February – so scroll down if you’re looking for something new to read. Now, let’s take a look at those models.

The Blood of the Phoenix box kicked off the Psychic Awakening saga in a gripping fashion. The story detailed a breakdown in the uneasy truce between the Asuryani and Drukhari, culminating in an epic duel between two legendary warriors – here’s one of them now.

Jain Zar is the Phoenix Lord of the Howling Banshees, perfectly encapsulating the duality of the Bloody-handed God’s fury and grace. This model is an absolute stunner, capturing one of the finest warriors of the Craftworlds as she twirls and leaps, practically dancing through the air, wielding the Blade of Destruction and her triskele Silent Death to lethal effect.

Soon Jain Zar will be up for grabs to lead your Howling Banshees. Talking of which…

Joining their esteemed leader, you’ll be able to pre-order a box (or three) of updated Howling Banshees Aspect Warriors in plastic. Each kit of five includes both helmeted or bare headed options, and they’re armed with the iconic shuriken pistol and power sword pairing. You can optionally build one model as an Exarch, with a choice of four different heads and several weapon options, so none of your Exarchs need look the same.

Across the battlefield, Drazhar sizes up his mark.

The Master of Blades leads the murderous order of Incubi as their Executioner, the performance of his bloody duties the only lesson he offers them. The model is posed as though he’s accepting his next duel, wielding one of his signature demiklaives in each hand. You’ll want to add him to your Drukhari army to both eliminate priority targets and make nearby Incubi even deadlier. Now, about that…

These mercenaries and assassins carry wicked-looking klaives, two-handed weapons that allow them to slice through even heavy armour with ease, scything down elite infantry in a fountain of gore. Their sinister horned helmets and trophy racks are designed to strike terror into their foes, and their reputation is fearsome indeed. One of the five models can be built as a Klaivex with a pair of demiklaives, with a profile for linking them together or using them separately to unleash a flurry of blows.

Keep an eye out for more info about the Aeldari throughout the week! The fracturing of their fragile alliance is a riveting story. And if you like stories, you’re gonna love this next section.

Ghazghkull’s Back and he’s Spoiling for a Fight

PsyAwk-Sep09-PAHeader-zlw2.jpg

Behind every great grot, there is a massive Ork encouraging him (with a steel-capped boot). Yes, we’re talking about Ghazghkull here! He’s back, and we’re taking a look at the enemies that he’s acquired over the years.

9a538451.jpg

As one of the biggest and baddest Warbosses ever, Ghazghkull Mag Uruk Thraka* has developed quite the list of enemies, all desperate to put an end to the so-called prophet of Gork and Mork and his Waaagh!

fbb45dd0.jpg

Commissar Yarrick

c902ab99.jpg

Ghazghkull first encountered Commissar Yarrick during the Second War for Armageddon. Having swept across the world, Ghazghkull came to Hive Hades, where Yarrick was commanding the Imperial forces. Time and again, the Orks attacked. Time and again, they were repelled. Meeting in the centre of the maelstrom, the two heroes finally met, with Ghazghkull leaving Yarrick close to death. However, the Commissar had bought enough time to evacuate the Hive, and his victories had changed the course of the war. Eventually, Commander Dante and the Blood Angels arrived and drove the Orks from the surface of the planet.

Years later, Ghazghkull led an invasion of the planet Golgotha and Yarrick came out of retirement to put a stop to his nemesis. It wasn’t to be, as the Ork captured the Commissar and, rather than killing him, told him of his grand plan – Ghazghkull was going to return to Armageddon and he wanted Yarrick to lead the defences so that it would be a proper scrap. Since then, Yarrick has vowed to cleanse the galaxy of the menace of Ghazghkull once and for all.

High Marshal Helbrecht

b505681f.jpg

Returning as promised to Armageddon at the head of an even greater Waaagh!, epic battles were fought and a heroic defence brought the war to a protracted stalemate. Unable to strike the decisive blow, Ghazgkhull soon grew bored. He began to have visions and realised that Gork and Mork had a grander purpose in mind for him, so he left the planet, pursued by Commissar Yarrick and High Marshal Helbrecht of the Black Templars. Just when they thought that they had him cornered in the Haunted Gulf, Ghazghkull’s flagship Kill Wrecka disappeared in a blaze of green energy. Helbrecht’s crusade to end the green menace was back to square one.

Grand Master Belial

d57b58f2.jpg

He might be the Grand Master of the Deathwing these days, but when he first encountered Ghazghkull, Belial was Master of the Third Company of Dark Angels.** They faced each other on the planet Piscina IV, where the Dark Angels fought a desperate rearguard action until reinforcements arrived. While the sons of Caliban may have won the battle, the war for Piscina IV continues. Ghazghkull remains one of the few to ever best Belial in close combat – the Grand Master knows that he was lucky to survive, and such memories fuel his dreams of vengeance.

Hive Fleet Leviathan

27d02459.jpg

The benevolence of Gork and Mork saw Ghazghkull eventually reappear in Octarius, where the Overfiend was engaged in a massive conflict with the Tyranids of Hive Fleet Leviathan. Taking matters into his own klaw, Ghazghkull soon took charge of the situation and led the Orks in a wave of destruction. Then the unthinkable happened – Ghazghkull was swallowed whole by a Mawloc! That would have been the end of most Orks, but Ghazghkull isn’t most Orks. He tore his way out of the Mawloc, issuing a rallying cry to the greenskins and resuming his krumping of any Tyranids that got in his way. The Hive Mind had learned about a dangerous threat – it won’t underestimate Ghazghkull next time.

Space Wolves

e3ffc633.jpg

On the planet of Fenris, the Rune Priests of the Space Wolves have been ravaged by visions of pain and death. They saw a great green pyre spreading between the stars, and by casting the runes, they could only come to one conclusion – the Orks were becoming more united. It didn’t take them long to realise that there could only be one Ork behind this – Ghazghkull –  and take an oath to stop the murderous Warboss’ rampage. It will be a battle worthy of song.

The next Psychic Awakening book, Saga of the Beast, will centre around the Space Wolves’ attempts to finally end Waaagh! Ghazghkull, and you’ll be able to pick it up next month. In the meantime, get ready for the Ork incursions by grabbing the original model for Commissar Yarrick, available for one week only on a Made to Order basis.

* Imperial propaganda that Makari was being accompanied by eight grots stood on each other’s shoulders in a suit of Mega Armour has proven to be false.
** The Dark Angels have a bit of history with Ghazghkull – it was a bolt round from one of these Space Marines that removed a large part of his skull on the planet Urk, back when he was just one of the Boyz.

Space Wolves Lore – Part 1: Back From the BrinkPsyAwk-Sep09-PAHeader-zlw2-1.jpg

The Space Wolves are all set to make their grand appearance in the Psychic Awakening in the next instalment of the series, Saga of the Beast. However, in recent years, the Space Wolves have been tested – not just martially but also spiritually – like no other time in their history. Let’s take a look at some of the seismic events that have befallen the Chapter of late to gain some insight into the challenges they now face…

The Battle for Alaric Prime

When the Knight world of Alaric Prime was beset by a huge Ork invasion, Logan Grimnar led three Great Companies – the Champions of Fenris, the Blackmanes and the Drakeslayers – to its defence. Despite suffering heavy losses as they struggled to turn the tide of the war against the greenskins, the Space Wolves eventually gained the upper hand.

However, when the desperate Badmek Mogrok ordered the launch of a poorly retrofitted vortex missile battery, the resulting misfire tore a hole in the veil of reality and a vast host of Khornate Daemons began pouring through the warp breach. Though many of the remaining Orks were slaughtered in the ensuing massacre, the Space Wolves were forced to fight another costly battle before they could secure a final victory.

The Wrath of Magnus

After multiple reports of psychic premonitions and strange sightings reached the Great Wolf, it became clear that the 13th Company – thought lost more than 10 millennia ago during the invasion of Prospero – had returned. Without hesitation, Logan Grimnar sent forth the Great Companies to investigate and, if the rumours were true, discover the circumstances of their reappearance. Yet wherever the Wulfen were found, so too were the forces of Chaos, forcing the Space Wolves to engage in battles in a number of different war zones. Mercifully for the sons of Russ, the Wulfen themselves proved to be brutally powerful assets, and a great many of them were returned safely to the Fang.

However, the return of the Wulfen was revealed to be part of a masterplan by the Daemon Primarch Magnus the Red, who intended for their primal fury to corrupt the controlled ferocity with which the Space Wolves fight, forever breaking the noble spirit of the sons of Russ. Though the Space Wolves largely resisted the cruel fate Magnus had intended for them, the subsequent invasion of the Fenris System – and their home world itself – proved to be a different matter entirely…

The bitter fighting that followed saw Midgardia, one of two other planets orbiting the Wolf’s Eye, completely obliterated and an indelible mark from the conflict left on every planet in the system. Even the world spirit of Fenris itself was almost polluted by the machinations of the Crimson King. Magnus the Red slew many of those who stood against him, including Wolf Lord Egil Iron Wolf, but he was ultimately undone by a fateful blow from Logan Grimnar’s baleful axe and banished by a host of Grey Knight Purifiers. Though the Space Wolves emerged triumphant, they had suffered a terrible blow that had not just left not just their own ranks heavily depleted, but also those of the Fenrisian tribesmen from which the Chapter traditionally recruited.

The Fall of Cadia

Despite the grievous losses they had suffered in the defence of the Fenris System, the Space Wolves proudly answered the call to defend the Cadian Gate against Abaddon’s 13th and greatest Black Crusade, sending any Great Companies they could spare. In the desperate fighting that took place both on the planet’s surface and in orbit above, the Space Wolves could do little to stem the tide. Egil Iron Wolf’s successor Orven Highfell fought valiantly against the numberless Chaos hordes, but was eventually overcome.

Another Wolf Lord was lost in action, presumed slain, when Sven Bloodhowl led a near-suicidal boarding action against the Blackstone Fortress Will of Eternity. Though Bloodhowl’s actions crippled the ancient fortress’ impenetrable shields to leave it open to the full fury of Phalanx’s* mighty guns, Abaddon changed tact, sending the Blackstone Fortress crashing into Cadia to seal the planet’s doom.

The Primaris Miracle

The arrival of Roboute Guilliman to the embattled Fenris System at the head a Battle Group of the Indomitus Crusade should have been the answer to the Space Wolves’ prayers, for with him, he brought many hundreds of reinforcements created from their own genetic stock. Yet to a Chapter as fiercely proud as the Space Wolves, this unexpected blessing was perceived to be little more than an underhand attempt by the Lord-Commander to undermine their unique heritage and bring them in line with the Codex Astartes.

Logan Grimnar held a great council with the other Jarls of Fenris and his most trusted advisors to discuss the matter, and though many argued passionately for or against, the Great Wolf eventually passed his judgement. Logan Grimnar decided that a practical necessity for reinforcements, as well as their shared genetic heritage, outweighed the Space Wolves’ traditional distrust of outsiders, so he agreed to their Primaris battle-brothers being subsumed into the Chapter.

The Return of Magnus

When news of Magnus the Red’s return reached the halls of the Fang, Logan Grimnar sent no less than seven Great Companies to aid in the fighting. The campaign offered the Space Wolves the first opportunity to judge their new Primaris battle-brothers in action. Though the Imperial forces were eventually forced to grudgingly concede the sector to the rampant Chaos hordes, the Primaris elements of the Great Companies had fought valiantly, earning great respect from the new brothers they fought alongside. Fenrisian culture has ever been a meritocracy, and the Primaris Space Marines had proved their worth and, more crucially, earned the trust of their fellow Space Wolves.

The Space Wolves have, quite literally, been through the wars, haven’t they?! Be sure to check out the second part of Space Wolves lore later this week to see what lies in store for them in Saga of the Beast. In the meantime, if you’d like to read more about the pivotal events of the Wrath of Magnus, check out the collection of Tales From War Zone Fenris.

* Phalanx is the vast, indomitable star fortress of the Imperial Fists, one of the mightiest military assets in the entire Imperium.

Space Wolves Lore – Part 2: To Slay a Beast

PsyAwk-Sep09-PAHeader-zlw2-1.jpg

Earlier in the week, we discussed many of the trials and tribulations that have befallen the Space Wolves in their recent history. Yet thanks to the introduction of Primaris Space Marines into its ranks, the Chapter has recovered much of its strength and is now set to do what it does best once more, take the fight to the enemies of the Allfather. With Saga of the Beast on the horizon, it looks like the Space Wolves have their sights firmly set on the Orks – and one greenskin in particular

Visions of the Beast

One of the many roles performed by the Rune Priests of the Space Wolves is using their gifts to scour the skeins of fate to glean what they can of future events. They channel the wyrd utilising a number of shamanic methods that have been practised by the people of Fenris for countless generations, ranging from casting bones to trance-like dream quests.

9ebf4e97.jpg

In recent months, the Chapter’s Rune Priests have been universally plagued by disturbing visions of grotesque trolls, green of skin and gnarled of flesh. Most troublesome of all was the monstrous beast that ever loomed in the distance, barely visible. As ever, the exact nature of the future that awaited them remained unclear, yet there was one undeniable truth that could be discerned – the greenskins were abroad once more, guided by a beast that was both single-minded and powerful enough to unite them.

6406cfbc.jpg

The Wolf and the Beast

One glimmer of hope in the dread prophecies of the Rune Priests was the presence of a Blackmaned Wolf fearlessly facing down the monstrous beast in their visions. It didn’t need a seer’s insight to understand that it was Ragnar Blackmane’s wyrd to face Ghazghkull in battle. Yet Logan Grimnar knew that in order to discover Ghazghkull’s location, the Space Wolves would have to engage the Orks on multiple fronts. To that end, he called upon all of the Great Companies to provide warriors with which to bring the fight to the greenskins, wherever they could be found. Only by drawing them out could Ghazghkull’s exact location be discovered.

c21a72a4.jpg

As the Space Wolves mustered to set out across the Sea of Stars to combat the rising Ork threat, word was sent urgently to Ragnar, relaying to him the auguries of the Rune Priests. Never one to back down from even the deadliest challenge, Ragnar began the hunt for Ghazghkull in earnest, determined to cut the head from the beast and put an end to him once and for all.

0023b7d9.jpg

One Fight Too Many?

The last the Space Wolves heard of Ragnar’s strike force was a garbled astropathic transmission from the Wolf Lord claiming that he had tracked the beast to its lair on the hive world of Krongar. What little could be understood from the message was that Ragnar’s Great Company was divided between a number of different war zones, so he didn’t have the numbers with him to launch a full-scale planetary attack. Instead, he planned to lead a covert mission that would infiltrate the Orks’ foremost stronghold and force a direct confrontation with Ghazghkull, enabling Ragnar to kill the beast in person. It was a bold plan, but one that came at tremendous risk to the Wolf Lord and his warriors…

71399441.jpg

As of yet, no word has reached the Space Wolves of the mission’s outcome. Fearing the worst, the Blackmanes of Strike Force Icefang have raced towards the last known coordinates of their Jarl in a desperate bid to discover his fate. Had Ragnar Blackmane fallen in battle? Was the Young King dead?

Psychic Awakening: The Cleansing Light

PsyAwk-Sep09-PAHeader-zlw2.jpg

Dark times call for new tactics and great discoveries, even for the hidebound Tech-Priests of the Adeptus Mechanicus. In the space around the venerable forge world of Metalica, the servants of the Machine God are about to make a discovery that could alter the way they wage war… and change them forever.

The Iambic Khorulam made its final manoeuvres towards the station. In comparison to the majestic cog-tooth spirals that made up the lonely spacestation’s superstructure, the forge-barque wallowed silently like an ungainly void whale. Every tooth-like projection, some as large as the Khorulam itself and serving as docking piers, was lined with smaller protrusions, and these in turn were lined with more, on and on in a dizzying fractal design. Viewed from an axis, the station was snowflake-like with its six protruding primary piers.

Error, mused Logicus Dunal Rovarrin as she worked, the Fylachor Terminus is like a component of the Omnissiah’s celestial engine.

Nothing like the station existed anywhere else in Metalica’s stellar system, for its heritage spoke undeniably of Mars. Upon first encountering it, Dunal had opined it was a triumphal example of 32nd millennium re-expansion. Trichine Jorrdeth, Dunal’s overseer and fellow Tech-Priest, tartly responded that it was a yoke of Martian hegemony, best left out here in the forge world system’s furthest reaches.

The Khorulam settled half a mile away from the nearest docking pier spur, on the dark side of the Fylachor Terminus. Its hard edges barely lit by the Khorulam’s running lights, the station’s outline was discernible against the backdrop of stars. Above one outcrop of its architecture, Metalica’s star could be glimpsed. At half a light year away, to biological eyes it was indistinguishable from the vastly more distant stars around it. Dunal’s gunmetal optics span and clicked in the metal of her face as part of her mind ran orbital auguries on the star. She stood at the ship’s dark and cramped bridge station, the majority of her focus coordinating the Iambic Khorulam’s extraordinary umbilical.

d0e5bab0-330x131.jpg

Dozens of feet in diameter, the mechanical appendage slowly stretched its way across the gap between the forge-barque and the station. Enormous heat sinks and strange devices like inverted void shield generators studded its surface, along with slab-sided power housings emitting turquoise light from a lattice of grilles. Bulkheads ran through it like cartilage, and at each intersection was a vast portal of hyper-dense alloys sealing off section after section of the umbilical. They resembled the doors to vast treasure vaults, or the hatches of oubliettes holding dangerous guests.

Trichine Jorrdeth’s vine-like mechadendrites were integrated, like Dunal’s, into the umbilical’s controls. Through them, Jorrdeth sensed the other Tech-Priest’s distraction and sent an irritable burst of calibrations into Dunal’s hemisphere of operation. They forced her to swiftly – and unnecessarily – recalculate several parameters.

38a89950.jpg

‘Attend fully, logicus!’ the trichine snapped. ‘This is not an orbital transfer shaft. We must work in absolute synchrony to ensure the entreaties to each of the umbilical’s machine spirits are received with grace.’

‘Apologies, trichine. Full cogitation is restored. Is the magos certain this level of protection is necessary? The weapon is fully secure, surely.’

‘Do not question the magos’ certainty, logicus.’

Somehow, Trichine Jorrdeth managed to load Dunal’s signifier with disdain through his subtle use of Metalica’s high-echelon cant and careful positioning of his subordinate mechadendrites.

‘The weapon is secure. The magos’ research, however, revealed that additional caution must be taken. The exact efficacy of the weapon is – unknown.’ Jorrdeth made a distasteful gesture at having to use the word. ‘It is part of our sacred duty to present the magos with a full assessment of its capabilities, as well as recovering the artefact itself. Additional, this station is of the Red Planet. We cannot assume the compliance of its machine spirit. This is an inordinate honour – the successful operation of the Reclamation Fleet is dependent on my- on our holy endeavours.’

The umbilical crossed the final stretch of silent space, its surface dusted with icy fragments. Even on the bridge of the Iambic Khorulam, Dunal detected the heavy mechanical reverberations as its claw-like clamps locked into position on the station’s airlock. A pict-thief showed her the ranks of waiting servitors at its entrance sway with the movement. It was an inestimable tribute of Metalica to grant Reclamation Fleet M4-Huy-Ω one of its precious arcana mechanicum, an ecumenical gesture of unity between those who would vie for power during the long voyage into the dark. Dunal could not fully explain to herself why the magos had despatched Jorrdeth and herself here and none other. There were adepts in far higher favour with the magos than even Jorrdeth believed himself to be.

With deft impulses Dunal ordered the dozens of servitors, logo-jacks and mechanothralls through the umbilical and past each slowly hinging or irising portal, led by a humming servo-skull that had once been a high-ranking lexmechanic. Dunal knew Jorrdeth did not know what the magos had learned; the trichine would have artlessly boasted of such confidence. All they had been given was this location millions of miles from Metalica, and a hexaclavus signal-key that the magos claimed would be needed to secure the weapon. The only information the two Tech-Priests had been able to glean had come from mnemo-echoes that resounded through Metalica’s invisible data-fields. The weapon had been wielded in millennia past by the forge lords of Metalica, aiding them in the Quest for Knowledge by wiping out mutants, xenos and engines corrupted by the immaterium. It was said to have saved and purified the forge worlds of Thoromest, Fardell Majoris and Stele Lex, yet none knew where these planets had lain or if their forges still survived. After an unknown crisis, the weapon had been hidden, supposedly at Mars’ tyrannical insistence. Until the magos’ discovery, not even the Fabricator General of Metalica had known that it was here, at the very edge of the forge world’s system. Only the weapon’s name remained certain: Radiant Wrath.

After an elongated exchange between Iambic Khorulam’s cogitator engine and the controls of the docking pier, Dunal and Jorrdeth’s servitors gained entry. The Tech-Priests watched avidly through the manifold senses of their proxies. The magos had insisted that neither of them were to board the Fylachor Terminus in person. Thus they were forced to experience its holy aura vicariously through the limited senses of their cyborg thralls. Ancient lumen strips flickered, olfac-scans registered ozone and unusual hydrocarbon scents. Shimmering curtains of data flapped like seaweed in currents of pulsing energy, passed through by the unheeding servitors as though they were mist, or hung like tapestries over laser-etched representations of the Opus Machina.

c6dd4ae2-330x315.jpg

Despite binharic entreaties, there was no direct response from the station’s controlling logic engine – merely automated blurts from outlying systems – and nor did there appear to be any physical crew. The servitors lumbered, hovered and wove their way along an interminable corridor through the station’s deserted interior. Sprays of sanctified incense and blurts of binharic prayers haunted their steps as they moved in procession; their relative positions echoed Metalica’s varied radium frequencies. The servitors passed sealed chambers bearing warnings in dialects of Lingua Technis that had not been broadcast in millennia, and black passages down which the thin atmosphere trickled as if pulled by some void beyond. With a final turn of the corridor, Dunal suddenly commanded the servitors to halt as her flesh-voice gasped and even Jorrdeth loosed an involuntary binharic imprecation. The passage terminated suddenly, the space beyond a vast chasm.

There were lights here, but they failed to fill the enormous space and glittered like weak stars. A smudge of grey was visible in the distance where the servitors’ cranial-lumen blazed dead ahead. There was still no response to the Iambic Khorulam’s repeated hails, yet the servitors’ presence had disturbed something. Some of the distant stars in that immense space were moving.

With a suddenness that made the Tech-Priests jump, light flared like a dozen miniature suns. The void was lit. It was spherical, and at its centre on anti-gravitic impulsors hung a lead-coloured cube, some thirty feet across. The inside of the sphere was encrusted with thousands of heavy-bore weapons on gimballed turrets, and the stars the Tech-Priests had glimpsed were their targeting reticules. Twenty or so of the nearest had swung to face the servitors; hoppers churned and ammo feeds spun, while plasma cells thrummed at high power. All the others remained resolutely fixed on the leaden cube.

‘Attend, I am detecting intrusion!’ Jorrdeth blurted, his four mechanical manipulators and three mechadendrites flashing between ship controls.

‘Omnissiah! The data-stacks, something has breached our firewalls! It is ravenous, I– I have no control!’

‘What is it? Are we under attack?’ Dunal asked, seeing the same invasive aggression displayed in flickering columns of data.

Jorrdeth suddenly looked back up at the occulus arrays showing the weapon systems targeting – yet not firing upon – the servitors, and his silvered irises narrowed in understanding.

‘It is the station: the Fylachor Terminus. We have awoken its central machine spirit. By the Auric Ratio, I have never witnessed such power, such finesse!’

‘It will kill us!’ Dunal hastily disconnected each of her tentacular mechadendrites from the Khorulam’s systems.

‘It could easily have done that already, logicus. It is interrogating our logic core. It will find the magos’ hexaclavus file. Do not make any transmission. The magos’ signal key will suffice,’ said Jorrdeth, though his cant was tinged with wavering variables.

After several macro-seconds, a series of runic indicators flashed. The dull grey cube in the sphere’s centre moved slowly towards the tunnel’s entrance where the remaining servitors were still pinned under the glare of the nearest turrets. Every other visible weapon system followed the cube’s movement with mechanical precision. As it neared, the Tech-Priests saw its almost featureless flanks contained a single viewing portal, and the passive arrays hidden within the former lexmechanic’s skull detected the unmistakable chronometric waveforms of stasis technology. The cube docked with the passage with a clank of metal.

‘Is it safe? Can we…’ Dunal’s voice trailed off.

Jorrdeth’s manipulators danced over runic controls, and his grille emitted grating benedictions. The servitors responded and approached the unreflective cube, the servo-skull hovering to point its multiple optics and sensor vanes through the viewing portal. The Tech-Priests watched, rapt, as the detectors slowly swept the interior. Stasis vaults lined the cube’s walls, filled not with the esoteric techno-arcana they were expecting, but with factorum-produced items of quotidian quality: disconnected bionic limbs and loops of dusty data-tethers. There was a weapons rack in one stasis vault, but the radium carbine inside was scuffed and smoke-stained. Dunal could not understand. This carbine was not a purifying weapon that would ensure the Reclamation Fleet’s success. The magos had been deceived.

The servo-skull’s optics peered into the final corner where a large stasis sarcophagus sat. Winking indicators showed its systems had entered revivification. Most of the armaglass was frosted and crazed with some distorting patina, but the pale robes of Metalica were visible inside, the gunmetal bionics of known forge-temples and armour plates dulled with grime. The stasis vault’s countdown completed and the distinctive helmet of a Skitarius Vanguard lifted slowly to face the portal.

e5fa8716.jpg

The Iambic Khorulam sat above Skorifex’s equatorial belt, where the forge world’s major temples still burned in psychic conflagrations. The remainder of the magos’ Reclamation Fleet remained on the other side of the system, leaving the forge-barque to approach alone. The Khorulam was not a warship, yet none of the fleet sought to closely guard its exposed flanks. The magos’ indentured astropaths detected the final frantic cries of their kin upon Skorifex. The fleet’s psychic messengers shrieked tearfully of predatory sentiences drawn from the warp, nightmares of blood and oil brought forth by witch-breeds in the forge world’s slave population.

The Skitarius from Fylachor Terminus occupied a specially constructed drop ship in one of the Khorulam’s rear launch bays, as far from the bridge as possible. Autonomic signifiers identified the warrior as Skitarius-Luminor 000011, though few referred to it as anything other than Radiant Wrath. It seemed incapable of transmitting intelligibly and every attempt to analyse its emitters resulted in the loss of yet another servitor. The Khorulam had lost more than fifty during the transit from Metalica, in addition to all of those that had set foot on the station. The magos had not been deceived after all, thought Dunal, as she looked at the blackened puckering of her flesh around implants that flaked with crumbling oxides. The purifying weapon was simply one that walked and thought.

The excoriating emissions from the silent soldier were unprecedented. They bled into everything, a gale of zeta particles blowing in a torrent from every part of its body. Servitors in the same section of the hold swiftly lost their biological components, their waxy skin blackening and sloughing away in a matter of minutes. Metallic compounds scorched, cracking and crumbling. How the warrior’s own components survived such a barrage was not something that could be determined, not on the forge-barque. Jorrdeth and Dunal had desperately marshalled their remaining servitors in work rotas through the tempestuous journey in the warp, barely keeping the ship running as the Skitarius’ radiation leeched into the ship’s superstructure. Twice they received emergency supplies from the rest of the fleet via disposable shuttle – no other ship deigned to get close. Though Jorrdeth and Dunal kept themselves as far away as they could, they had been forced to replace many of their flesh and bionic components repeatedly. The magos promised that ultra-deionisation protocols would be enacted once Radiant Wrath was away from the ship, assuring the two Tech-Priests that replacement augmetics were more than sufficient for now. Dunal wasn’t sure.

800547d2-330x110.jpg

The logicus watched the drop ship containing Radiant Wrath hit Skorifex’s atmosphere through the single bionic eye Jorrdeth had allowed her from the last shipment, the trichine having sequestered the choicest replacements. Her thoughts were disorganised. Delicate neural threading had provided replacement meat for her brain where it had withered, but it was as if calculations had somehow become sluggish as well.

‘It will be worth it, trichine,’ she told the Tech-Priest behind her. ‘Skorifex will be tainted for hundreds of millennia. But it will be pure and purged, a testament to the glory of Metalica and the Machine God.’

Jorrdeth had not been able to respond for days. The physical manifestations of the Skitarius’ furious aura were not where its effects ended. Streams of tumorous logoscripts had multiplied in Jorrdeth’s noosphere, parameters expanding and twisting in the trichine’s neural architecture, facts distorting. Knowledge, the gilded jewel held in awe by every Tech-Priest, bloated with a kind of replicating and mutating viral curse, one that Dunal could see swelling in her own cogitations. Logicus Dunal had hidden her fear in regular updates to the magos.

She suppressed an unpleasantly emotional burst of fear. She was part of something wondrous and divine. Every great endeavour had its martyrs.

Sunday Preview – Beasts vs Other Beasts

155678d3.jpg

The next chapter in Warhammer 40,000’s Psychic Awakening is nearly upon us, not to mention some great new reads!

The Cicatrix Maledictum has torn through the galaxy, emboldening the greenskin menace across the galaxy. This coming week, pre-orders will go live for Saga of the Beast, which features both Ragnar Blackmane and Ghazghkull Thraka!

Watch this video to see what’s coming up at a glance, then read on for more details!

It’s a test of cunning, rage and brutality on both sides! The savage Space Wolves go toe to toe with the largest Ork Waaagh! seen for thousands of years. The Prophecy of the Wolf battlebox promises a truly epic clash between Ragnar Blackmane and Ghazghkull Thraka – both are back in action and stronger than ever before!

f6cd29e9.jpg

This weighty box contains everything you need to stage your own slugfest throwdowns between Ragnar’s Space Wolves and Ghazghkull’s Great Waaagh!, including a book packed with gripping stories and missions to play. Not only do you get two forces – Space Marines and Orks – but this is currently the only way to get the astonishing updated models of two beloved characters of the 41st Millennium.

c0e1ce3a.jpg

Ragnar has crossed the Rubicon Primaris, and he’s ready to lead the pack to hunt! Even in his new armour, he’s instantly recognisable, and his aggressive pose perfectly captures the indomitable spirit of the Space Wolves. If you’re looking to bolster a Space Wolves army (or start a new one), this updated classic is the perfect choice to command them.

08d31f80.jpg

Not to be outdone, Ghazghkull has undergone something of a transformation himself, truly earning his nickname – “The Beast”. Every self-respecting Ork Waaagh! will want the prophet of Gork and Mork driving them to further acts of wanton destruction. Painters all around the world could be heard uttering an audible gasp upon seeing this remarkable model for the first time.

And let’s not forget about Makari, his lucky standard bearer, who makes a triumphant (if somewhat dubious) return with his own new model.

bed8428f.jpg

Don’t call him a sidekick – Makari has amassed a cult following of his own. Stronger than ever, he’s returned after putting paid to the nasty rumour of his untimely end. He brings with him his signature 2+ invulnerable save and infamous luck which makes Ghazghkull and nearby Goff Orks even harder to shift. On top of that, nearby Goff Gretchin are inspired by his very presence – he’s a real hero of the people.

23f35433.jpg

As great as Ragnar and Ghazghkull (and Makari) are, there’s much more to love about this battlebox. You’ll get 10 Primaris Space Marines that can be built as Infiltrators or Incursors, five Ork Nobz and three Ork Meganobz, not to mention an Ammo Runt and a Grot Oiler. Prophecy of the Wolf also includes a 32-page book chock full of art, background material and rules to recreate the culmination of this bloody campaign for yourself.

While the battlebox focuses on the knock-down-drag-out combat at the centre of the war, Psychic Awakening: Saga of the Beast dives deep into the core of the Space Wolves and the Orks. You’ll find more missions, plus updated rules and loads of new options for both sides.

0efaf474.jpg

Available in both hardback and digital editions, this 80-page book describes the greenskin unification known as the Great Waaagh! alongside the prophecies and visions of the Rune Priests that informed Ragnar’s vow to end it.

This book is essential for collectors of both Space Wolves and Orks – you’ll find new Stratagems, updated and expanded datasheets, Relics, psychic powers and even rules for giving your Ork vehicles Kustom Jobs and creating Specialist Mobs.

We’ll have a lot more to say about this throughout the week, so check back to get the full scoop.

If you’re a dedicated Son of Russ or devotee of Gork (or maybe Mork) you’ll want to get the collector’s edition of Saga of the Beast while you can.

46550bd6.jpg

This stunning tome features black page edges, a black ribbon bookmark and a soft-touch finish with debossed details and full artwork on the front and back. Not only do you get all the rules, art and background from the standard book, but this edition also includes extra material from the Prophecy of the Wolf campaign book, plus four short stories originally published right here on the Warhammer Community site.

If that’s not enough reading material to satisfy your craving for Space Wolves, Black Library will throw you another couple of bones this week.

Orks: Da New Rulez

PsyAwk-Sep09-PAHeader-zlw2-1.jpg

Da new Psychic Awakening book, Saga of the Beast, adds even more toyz fer da Boyz. Today, we’re taking a look at some of the new Stratagems, Kustom Jobs, psychic powers and specialist mobs in the book. All together now – Waaagh!

Ghazghkull Thraka

We’ve already seen the real mastermind behind the Ork renaissance, now let’s have a look at his best buddy.

Ghazghkull is back and he’s bigger and badder than before. He’s still da Prophet of Gork and Mork but, after going under the knife of Mad Dok Grotsnik, he’s now even ’arder!

As well as getting a physical upgrade, da Meks have been working on Ghazghkull’s weapons too. He now has an even shootier shoota (called Mork’s roar) and an even krumpier klaw (called Gork’s klaw).

As da biggest boss, Ghazghkull can forcefully take charge of an Ork army from any Clan, and his Great Waaagh! ability still works on all Orks.

Of course, Ghazghkull is still a Goff at heart, and he gets even more benefits in a Goff army. But whatever army you take him in, he’s going to break some ’eads.

Clan Psychic Powers

This being the Psychic Awakening, each of the six Ork Clans (and the Freebooterz) all get a new psychic power, which can be selected instead of generating one from the Waaagh! discipline. The Blood Axes get Clever Talk, which allows you to be dead kunnin’ before you get dead brutal.

With all of that Waaagh! energy flying around, your Weirdboyz are about to get even weirder.

Specialist Mobs

Sometimes Orks throw off the constraints of their Clan and instead group together with other like-minded greenskins. Saga of the Beast lets you do this, giving you a totally new way of building a fun and flavourful Ork army. You even get to benefit from a unique Subkulture related to the Specialist Mob you choose! If you like burnin’ stuff, choose the Pyromaniacs specialist mob and get the Arsonists Subkultur.

This is a great way for your Boomboyz, Feral Orks, Madboyz and more to gang up together and break some heads.

Kustom Jobs

Ork Meks never stop messin’ with their creations – they’re always tinkerin’ and experimentin’ – but when it works, the results can be spectorkular! Saga of the Beast lets you take one of these Kustom Jobs for free if you have a Mekboy Workshop in your army. Need your Killa Kans, Deff Dreads, Morkanauts and Gorkanauts to get into combat faster? Get them booked in to be fitted with Orkymatic Pistons.

If you’ve not got a Mekboy Workshop, you can still choose a Kustom Job through the use of a Stratagem. So, everybody can have a Souped-up Speshul, some Nitro-powered Squigs or a Forktress.

Stratagems

Orks don’t usually bother with things like ‘taktiks’ or ‘stratergee’, they leave that boring stuff to other races, like da ’umies. That’s not to say that they don’t have a few tricks up their sleeves* on the battlefield. Want to make your Burna Boyz and Lootas more reliable? Then bring in a Klever Spanner.

Or maybe your Flyboyz are jealous of their mates having all the fun on the ground and just want to join in.**

That means that every unit within 6” suffers D3 mortal wounds! And what Ork player hasn’t dreamt of having the ability to deliberately crash their planes into the enemy?

Psychic Awakening: Saga of the Beast is available to pre-order from Saturday, along with the Prophecy of the Wolf battlebox, which includes the new Ghazghkull Thraka model. In the meantime, grab yourself a Dakkajet so that you’re ready to crash it into your enemies!

* Even though most Boyz don’t wear sleeves.
** Make sure that you fasten your seatbelt and return your tray table to the upright position.
