RR12 - Flying Gargoyles of Bardajs85rr12barda.jpg

Barda Von Micklestein was neither the most famous, nor the most powerful wizard ever to live within the confines of the busy seaport of Marienburg. He was, however, almost certainly the most careless. It was as a result of his personal ineptitude that a horde of flying Gargoyles were to be released upon the unsuspecting folk of the city. The ensuing orgy of destruction lasted for a week; 7 days in which hellish, abhuman forms stalked and slew the petrified citizenry. By the time things quietened down much of the city lay desolate, and Barda Von Micklestein dangled from a hastily improvised gibbot outside the Dog and Duck Inn.

The Barda Gargoyles were a new and previously unknown type of Lesser Demon, but other wizards were soon to learn how to safely summon and control them using the level 2 Summon Lesser Demon spell. The Gargoyles can fly as swoopers, and have a profile as given below. They have normal Lesser Demon powers, causing fear in living creatures under 10' tall and having psychological and routing immunity (except when caused by Greater Demons or Deities). In addition Barda Gargoyles have an affinity with fire, and cannot be affected in any way by fire or fire based magic.

The Great Standard carried by these demons appears to carry the device of some unknown, but undoubtably powerful God. So long as the Barda Gargoyles carry this standard no other demonic troops will dare to attack them, not even Greater Demons.

The foul Double Horn carried by the Gargoyle musicians is also magical, for its blast causes severe pain, or even death in any one unit of living creatures within 20". This is the equivalent of a missile attack with D6 automatic hits at Strength 4.

The Barda Demons are led by Demonic Champions with improved profiles and the ability to use limited magic. They count as wizards, with a Constitution of 10 points and the ability to throw I level 1 Fire Ball spell per turn. Constitution points cannot be regained whilst the demons remain in the Known World, but are replenished automatically when the demons return to their own plane. 50 points are added to the demon's points total for this ability.

EQUIPMENT
Armament - Sword and Spear Armour - Shield and Mail
BATTLECRY
A croaking howl, or insane cackle.
DEEDS
The assault upon Marienburg may have given these creatures a taste for human blood. In any case they have fought on numerous occasions on behalf of the wizards of Marienburg, always with barbaric ferocity.
SHIELD
Both the standard and the shields carry the same strange device, almost certainly the emblem of the Deity which the Gargoyles serve.
UNIFORMS
No uniforms are worn as such. The Gargoyles themselves appear to be able to change their colour - some appear black, others green or red. Their mail armour is made out of shining brass. Spears have red shafts and brass tips.
NOTE
Fly as swoopers

Gargoyles of Barda
Flying Stone Warriors from Marienburg
Barda Von Micklestein was neither the most famous, nor the most powerful wizard ever to live within the confines of the busy seaport of Marienburg. He was, however, almost certainly the most careless. During a magical experiment, Barda had inadvertently created a monstrous flying hoard out of the stone gargoyles on many of the surrounding buildings had on their roofs. The mercenary legions of Marienburg were caught completely by surprise, costing many their lives.

Barda had no idea what he had done until heard a handgun fired just out side his window and saw a Gargoyle crash to the ground. Most of the monster's body had shattered when it hit the ground, and yet it still attempted to fight with it's remaining limbs. Barda first thought was not about the safety of the city, no, it was how he was going to hide this from the master wizards at the College of Magic. So he decided he was going to leave town. Barda quickly gathered what things he could carries and ran as fast he could toward the riverboat leaving to Altdorf soon.

The mayhem of the Gargoyles attack was getting out of control, and Barda was able to make his escape almost unnoticed. That was until he had reached the street in front of the Dog and Duck Inn. There were a number of mercenaries in the street fending off several Gargoyles. And if Barda's luck could not get any worse, all of the Gargoyles stopped fighting, looked right at the careless wizard, said his name, and flew off. The mercenaries know right away that this wizard has something to do with the attack and grabbed him and dragged him to the Inn. The mercenaries then preceded to beet a confession out of Barda and then placed him on a chair to hang him. The stressed wizard tried to cast a teleport spell to get him out of the inn before the mob hung him. Once again the incompetent wizard failed to cast the right spell, his spirit, instead of his body, was near was moved to the nearest safe place.

By the time the morning came, the Gargoyles were corralled at the lighthouse at the temple of Mannan and when the master wizards discovered that Barda was responsible for events of the evenings, they sent a number of Witchhunters to bring him to them. The Witchhunters discovered Barda's body hanging from the rafters of the Dog and Duck Inn. They cut him down and presented the body the master wizards. With out knowing what Barda had done to create the monsters, master wizards had no choice but to hire a mercenary band to destroy the lot of them.

The Tilean Captain, the master wizards had hired, went to the lighthouse to fulfill his contract. The tower was filled with the stone warriors and the captain quickly saw length of his life get real short. One of the Gargoyles jumped down and stood in front of the captain. Then the strangest thing happened the stone beast spoke. It said, "I am Barda, and I have created these things." The Captain was shocked to say the least; he in turn asked the monster if the others would fallow him. Barda thought so. A spark of inspiration hit the mercenary captain; in Tilea the Merchant Princes could really use hard to destroy flying troops. Envisioning a huge reword for bringing these things to Tilea, the captain convinced Barda to fly to his Man-O-War for transit to safety. And from that day on the Gargoyles of Barda have worked as mercenaries for the Merchant Princes and other generals, mostly all Barda has asked in return was place safe from being destroyed. Many general saw this as a real bargain.

Cause Fear
Flying Unit: Like all units of flyers, the Gargoyles Of Barda can fly and always skirmish, as described on page 106 of the Warhammer Rulebook

Made of Stone: The Gargoyles of Barda are in fact animated stone statues. To represent this all of the Gargoyles have a 5+ Armor Save and all poison attacks count as normal attacks.

Stubborn: These stone beasts do not break easily; to represent this, the Gargoyles of Barda are Stubborn as described in the Warhammer rulebook.

Designer's Note: The Gargoyles of Barda are a mix of man-sized stone beasts with wings. I recommend using old Harpies, the New Dark Elf Harpies, and Chaos Furies models as the Gargoyles.

Model History and Pictures
The Gargoyles of Barda was the twelfth Regiment of Renown made for Second Edition. The models were mounted on a (then new made) flying bases and packaged similar fashion as the Regiments of Renown's of the time, with one command model and four troopers. Compared to the other Second Edition Regiments of Renown, the Gargoyles had a remarket ably small run, and very few of the models still exist today. When I started hunting down these models two years ago, I was only able to find the musician and four troopers on Ebay about 4 months ago for about $40. They are rare to say the least.

For those of you who with to use the Gargoyles of Barda in your armies, the Night Horrors line of models have some great demons that can pass easily as stone Gargoyles. The Night Horrors line are still available on the GW website in the Undead Archive section.

Another Old World city makes its debut: Marienburg. It is in a more familiar guise as a “seaport”, though the city’s open demonology differs from the later setting.
