Sunday Preview: Once More Unto the Fortress

AK7COGNbHygA6T24.jpg

Next week sees the release of the final Blackstone Fortress expansion, plus a whole range of Blackstone Fortress stories from Black Library. Join us as we take a look at next week’s pre-orders but first, here’s the handy highlights package.

BlackstonePreview-Oct29-Header2jcr-1.jpg

You’ve hunted down the dreaded Ambull, faced off against an empowered Obsidius Mallex and his cultists, and befriended the mysterious Zoat to quell the Seethe. Now, it’s time to enter the Blackstone Fortress for one last time. Ascension sees the shifting corridors of the fortress rebuild themselves as massive Guardian Drones are unleashed to hunt down trespassers.

This time there is no going back to the safety of Precipice, as the Quest to Endure sees your explorers frantically searching for a stronghold. At the same time, their surroundings continuously change in a rolling road format, which means that it’s almost impossible to play the same game twice. At the centre of the stronghold is one of the most dangerous threats within the Blackstone Fortress – but defeating them is just the beginning.

This expansion contains everything you need to play the exciting new quest, including two new Citadel miniatures for the Guardian Drones, board tiles, tokens, and cards. Can your explorers make it to the climactic conclusion of Blackstone Fortress?

Blackstone Fortress: Ascension – The New Models

qP5EeM1K4ivyCON3.jpg

Anyone who’s ventured into the Blackstone Fortress will know how deadly Spindle Drones can be, especially when their threat level rises! Today, we’re taking a look at their bigger brothers, the Guardian Drones.

Ascension, the new Blackstone Fortress expansion, sees the fortress itself awaken. Even more defensive systems are coming online – one of which is the Guardian Drones. When Spindle Drones aren’t enough to stop your explorers, the fortress unleashes these larger constructs.

Armed with guardian salvo launchers and a destroyer pulse, the Guardian Drones will provide your party with a real challenge – what else did you expect for your final quest? Ascension comes with two Guardian Drone models, which you can assemble either launching a Hover Drone* or with nothing in its manipulator limbs.

As with all of the other Blackstone Fortress models, the Guardian Drones have rules for Warhammer 40,000 which we’ll be exploring later in the week. They also make an incredible base for conversions – we reckon we’ll be seeing these in a bunch of kitbashes in the near-future.

The Guardian Drones also continue the trend of Blackstone Fortress models exploring some of the lesser-seen corners of the 41st Millennium. They join the Ambull, the Zoat, and Espern Locarno, the Imperial Navigator, as strange and unusual beings from the grim darkness of the future.

Warhammer Quest: Blackstone Fortress – Ascension is available to pre-order from Saturday. Join us on our Facebook page to share pictures of your favourite Blackstone Fortress models, and your tales of derring-do within the mysterious space station.

* We’ll be taking a look at Hover Drones later in the week. Needless to say, they’re not good news for your explorers.

Blackstone Fortress: Ascension – The Lore

qP5EeM1K4ivyCON3.jpg

Ascension is the final expansion for Blackstone Fortress, and today we’re taking a look at what’s been going on in the lead-up. Spoiler Alert: if you’re not up to date with the Blackstone Fortress expansions then, this article will contain some spoilers – you’ve been warned!

At the very edge of known space lies the Blackstone Fortress. This mysterious station is packed with untold treasure and ancient technology, the likes of which will never be seen again. Unsurprisingly, it attracts explorers from across the galaxy, hungry for fame and glory. The port of Precipice has been set up close to the fortress and it’s from here that adventurers launch their quests.

So far, our intrepid explorers have taken on the might of Chaos Lord Obsidius Mallex. Then, they hunted down the dreaded Ambull through the maze of the Blackstone Fortress, before the Commissars and Ogryns of the traitorous Grendish 82nd were sent packing. Next, much needed reinforcements arrived to help deal with the hordes of Chaos Cultists who had infested the station, as well as a resurrected Mallex! And if all of that wasn’t bad enough, the Death Guard then entered the fortress, determined to use its power to spread their vile plagues.*

The last time we visited the Blackstone Fortress, we were accompanying The Archivist, a mysterious Zoat who promised to help our explorers quell an unstable region known as the Seethe. The shardquakes within the area were threatening to tear the Blackstone Fortress apart. Despite the Zoat’s best efforts,** the mission was a success, and the denizens of Precipice could breathe a sigh of relief. For a while…

Now, the Blackstone Fortress stirs again. Something deep inside is awakening – power systems are coming to life, creating a gravitational pull that has started to draw Precipice towards the fortress. Either the station’s devastating weapons systems destroy any ships that attempt to escape, or they are helplessly dragged into the ancient megastructure.*** With Precipice on the brink of destruction, our heroic explorers have only one option – to take one of the few remaining shuttles and head for the Blackstone Fortress to try to overcome its defences one last time.**** Can you defeat the deadly new Guardian Drones that the fortress has unleashed? Can you save Precipice, or will the Blackstone Fortress become your tomb?

Overcoming the tesselating chambers within the fortress will be a challenge unlike any other that your adventurers have faced before. We’ll be taking a look at the rules from Ascension that allow you to explore the Blackstone Fortress in a new and unique way later in the week. In the meantime, make sure that you’ve got a copy of the Warhammer Quest: Blackstone Fortress Annual. It features a range of different retinue characters to add to your expeditions, and you’re going to need all the help you can get!

* The word “hero” is banded around a lot in the 41st Millennium, but if you’re explorers managed to stop all of that then they are definitely heroes!
** Surprise! It betrayed you. Hey, we did warn you that there would be spoilers.
*** On the upside, several docking spurs have now become available to rent at Precipice.
**** We recommend having a montage of putting the gang back together for one last mission before you start this epic final quest.

Blackstone Fortress: Ascension – The Rules

qP5EeM1K4ivyCON3.jpg

Ascension, the final Blackstone Fortress expansion, brings an entirely new challenge to your explorers. Today, we’re giving you the lowdown on what to expect when you venture back into the Blackstone Fortress.

A New Maze

Rather than using combat cards to create your route, Ascension instead uses fragment cards. You set up the board as shown on the card and then randomly determine which of the three entrances your explorers enter through.

Instead of summoning the maglev transport as you would in other quests, your explorers must make their way to one of the other entrances. As you proceed, you draw another fragment card and assemble that fragment so that its entrance joins the existing fragment at its access point. This causes the original fragment to become unstable – at the start of each event phase, you have to remove a tile from the unstable fragment. If any explorers are on a tile when it is removed, they are taken out of action. So don’t dawdle – make sure that you keep moving forward.

This “rolling road” method of exploration means that it’s almost impossible ever to experience the same layout twice. It also means that you could be going in circles in the Blackstone Fortress, without the opportunity to return to Precipice to recuperate, as you desperately search for the exit.*

Guardian Drones

As if the ground disappearing beneath your explorers’ feet wasn’t bad enough, there is another new threat to your explorers – the Guardian Drones. We’ve already seen the awesome new models, but what can they do in the game? Well, they are armed with a selection of weapons that make them deadly at every range.

2fyA44kRD7NCUiub.jpg
They also have a special rule that makes any Spindle Drones even more dangerous for the duration of the combat. And these aren’t your common or garden Spindle Drones that you’ll be facing – they’re Awakened Spindle Drones.

Go8leBf2EM9ZoEbd.jpg
The Guardian Drones have a unique action, taken when they are hidden from explorers, which allows them to release Hover Drones. While they may look small and cute, they make the job of defeating the Guardian Drones much harder.

sqCEqLm6zChVGdcQ.jpg
Usually, we’d just suggest going and killing the Guardian Drone before it has an opportunity to spawn any Hover Drones, but with 18 wounds, that’s not going to be straightforward!

Warhammer Quest: Blackstone Fortress – Ascension is available to pre-order from Saturday. If you’ve not already taken your first steps into the fortress, make sure that you pick up the original Warhammer Quest: Blackstone Fortress boxed set now.

* We promise that there IS an exit. We wouldn’t recommend asking any of the locals for directions, though!

Guardian Drones in Warhammer 40,000

qP5EeM1K4ivyCON3.jpg

The new Blackstone Fortress expansion, Ascension, includes two deadly Guardian Drones. Yesterday, we took a look at the devastation they can wreak upon the explorers within the Blackstone Fortress itself. Today, we’re focusing on what they can do in games of Warhammer 40,000. They ARE big, and they ARE clever.

Guardian Drones have the Unaligned keyword, which means you can add them to any Warhammer 40,000 army. But precisely what are we adding?

iG7TFoLaAmggw1H6.jpg
With Toughness 6, and 7 Wounds, these are not going to be easy to take down. Where they really come into their own, though, is with their damage output.

6KgdAtl5E2UrfnQY.jpg
As a Monster, they’ll be able to keep shooting even if they’re in combat, and they’ll also be able to fire those salvo launchers on the move. Our advice? If you see a Guardian Drone on the tabletop, try not to get too close.

They also give a bonus to any nearby Spindle Drones thanks to their Drone Commander ability.

qBjjp5hTWQ7DUnWP.jpg
Let’s just remind ourselves what a drone pulse can usually do.

k4snpMM5iU0pWqMZ.jpg
So, that means that we have a Strength 6, AP -3, Damage 4 weapon – that’s going to really leave a mark! Make sure that you add in some Spindle Drones to your army along with their big brother.

If you need a giant, stalking robotic construct for your Warhammer 40,000 army (and frankly who doesn’t?) you’ll want to get some Guardian Drones. They are available in the final Blackstone Fortress expansion, Ascension – pre-order your copy from Saturday.
