[R&N] Aeronautica Imperialis de retour - Look to the Skies | Skies of Fire | Wrath of Angels

Flight Plan: The Sky’s on Fire

014e6d8e.jpg

Fans of tiny aeroplanes, we need to talk. Skies of Fire is out in the wild and it’s kind of a big deal. It’s an ideal box for both existing players and those getting into Aeronautica Imperialis for the first time. Read on to see why you need it in your life.

The Models

Naturally, the first and best reason to pick up this box is for those sweet, sweet aircraft. The T’au Air Caste are bursting onto the scene and making waves with Barracuda Fighters and Tiger Shark Bombers. The distinctive curves and unusual aesthetic of the T’au Empire look amazing at this small scale. Their looks also hint at a new and exciting play style, replete with missile swarms, drones and high-tech shenanigans.

9bTQ6vM2phN5e4S4.jpg

These planes will form the core of a versatile squadron list, ready to be expanded as you nail down your chosen loadouts and play style. Of course, they’re no fun without something to shoot those incredible guns at…

The Imperial Navy and Astra Militarum tag-team bring all kinds of hurt to the enemies of Mankind. Lightning Fighters look so cool, honestly, and their speed and agility make them some of the best dogfighters in the game. Valkyrie Assault Carriers offer new tactical options with their generous Transport capacity, and loads of firepower, as you’d expect from the preferred air ride of the Imperial Guard.

3eKAw3x0X7jQZg15.jpg

If you’re already collecting an Imperial Navy force, you’ll love the new tricks these aircraft bring to your game. Plus, the Astra Militarum models ally easily with your current stuff – no muss, no fuss. If you don’t already have a budding Imperial Navy squadron, this is a fantastic way to start one with a core of versatile units.

You’ll also get a transfer sheet which makes it easier to add markings to your aircraft for both sides of the box. If these models were the only thing in there, it would still be an essential buy for most players. But that’s not the case at all – this is a full on game in a box!

The Rules

Skies of Fire contains the full rules in a lightweight 36-page book, including everything you need to field the models in the box, as well as the ever-popular Dogfight scenario to pit them against each other.

7Mu3Apq0FV4hKo85.jpgIf you’re already playing Aeronautica Imperialis, you know how handy this thin-format rulebook is to flip through during your games, and now you can get a second copy so you don’t have to pass it around! Plus, you’ll get another set of the crucial quick reference cards!

If you’re not playing yet, this box has everything you need to get started and learn the rules. It’s fast to pick up, but it takes time to master the many manoeuvers and strategies you’ll need to win.

But wait, there’s MORE!* You’ll also get a leaflet with three additional scenarios: Ambush, Breakthrough and The Straggler to provide hours of enjoyment using just the contents of this box.

The Area of Engagement

A little change of scenery can really mix things up, and this box includes two more environments to battle over. Actually, hold up, that’s not entirely accurate – one side depicts a subterranean cavern to battle INSIDE of – for added radness.

This mat is 14 hexes by 16, made to be used with the models in the box to keep the action tight and focused. Both sides include details to remind you that the T’au Empire controls Taros, including military bunkers and civilian buildings on the surface showing both sides what they’re fighting over. Now let’s cover that game mat with tokens. So. Many. Tokens.

The Accessories

You need a fair amount of tokens to play Aeronautica Imperialis. It’s a fast game, with intense action, and these precious cardboard chits keep track of each aircraft’s status so that both players can see the state of things at a glance. And this box contains no fewer than 70 tokens! You’ll be able to keep track of everything.

There are markers to keep your Ace Manoeuvres secret until you spring into action, track your damage, and mark special statuses like Tailing (which is great) and Stalling/Spinning Out (which are less great). Of course, you’ll also find a set of 8 six-sided dice to add to your dice pool** – you’ll want a good handful when the Vulture Gunship comes out later on.

With all this goodness, Skies of Fire is a brilliant option for both new and existing players. If you’re just getting started, consider splitting the box with friends and family. You’ll be playing games in no time, feeling the hype of high-speed aerial combat. If you’re already enjoying Aeronautica Imperialis, you’ll appreciate the new aircraft and welcome the extra accessories and copy of the rules. Get a couple boxes and form the core of two mighty air wings, then fight for the skies of the 41st Millennium!

Truly, this box is for everyone. And it’s your lucky day, because you can order it RIGHT NOW, so it’ll be in your eager little hands before you know it.

We should be back on a regular schedule now, so check back next month for another (more traditional) Flight Plan. Until then – watch your six!

* Read this in your best infomercial announcer voice.
** Though, of course, we recommend getting the faction-specific dice to show your opponent where your loyalties lie.

The set includes:
- 2 resin Vulture Gunships supplied in 16 pieces each
- 2 Aeronautica Imperialis bases (each of which designates the model’s front, rear and side arcs, speed and altitude dials, as well as a clear stand to connect the aircraft to the base)

A new aircraft is swooping in for the Imperial Navy in the form of the Avenger Strike Fighter. Designed as a ground attack aircraft, the Strike Fighter’s main armament is its massive avenger bolt cannon – ideal for punching through the weaker top and side armour of enemy vehicles.*** Of course, such a big gun also makes it incredibly useful against enemy air targets too!

The new kit includes four of these destructive aircraft and also features optional lascannons, autocannons, hellstrike missiles, and skystrike missiles so you can select the right tools for the right mission. Pair them with some Thunderbolt or Lightning fighters, and you’ll have a squadron to strike fear into the hearts of your foes.

Tiens !

Underground Dogfights

Aeronautica-Aug25-Header20ys.jpg

We all know that in Aeronautica Imperialis the sky’s the limit. Now, thanks to the Taros Air War campaign book, you can also fight aerial duels underground! Today, we’re taking a look at the incredible subterranean assault rules.

XdNkk8HGyQ3bplZE.jpg

The war on Taros between the Imperium and the T’au Empire was an epic confrontation. Nowhere was this truer than in the skies above the planet, as Thunderbolts and Lightnings fought deadly duels with Barracudas. Due to the geography of the planet, both forces also made use of the extensive cave systems for army HQs, storage depots and a myriad of other functions. Often the best way to attack such a location was with airpower, and the new subterranean assault scenario lets you recreate these daring raids.

The scenario features one force as the attacker and the other as the defender. The attacker seeks to land their troops, while the defender attempts to stop them. What makes the scenario interesting is the cave system special rules, which see each player place areas of terrain to represent stalagmites and other rocky outcrops.

VsHpi1UQ0ixZwnkT.jpg

Make sure you get your manoeuvers right, though, because if you crash into terrain, there’s a good chance that your aircraft will become little more than a flaming wreck.

lh5tAePGfb6KZcVX.jpg

This is the kind of mission where the Valkyrie comes into its own. Not only can it carry troops, but its ability to hover means that you can hide behind those areas on terrain to avoid enemy fire. With its range of ace manoeuvres, the Barracuda will be able to do very well underground too, nimbly dancing between the rocky outcrops. It’s a good idea to upgrade them to the AX-5-3 variant as the midrange firepower of the swiftstrike burst cannon is deadly in the close confines of the cave.*

The subterranean assault scenario is a great new way to play Aeronautica Imperialis. Grab the Taros Air War campaign book and the Taros Area of Engagement board (one side of which features a sizeable subterranean water purification system) and give it a go for yourself. If you’re an Imperial squadron commander, don’t forget that the Avenger Strike Fighter is also available to pre-order from this weekend, adding even more firepower to your flights.

* Plus the cave is so dark that the night fighting rules are in effect, meaning that you can’t shoot at enemies that are at long range.

Nick Bayton Joins the Air Caste

014e6d8e.jpg

All this week, we’re painting Aeronautica Imperialis planes on the Warhammer YouTube channel. One of our painters, Nick Bayton – or “Kor’O Bay’ton” as he insists on being called now for some reason – is a seasoned Aeronautica Imperialis pilot and even ran the Warhammer Community Team office campaign. He’s recently fallen under the sway of the Greater Good and has been busy painting his latest squadron…

Nick: I absolutely love Aeronautica Imperialis and when the new T’au Air Caste aircraft landed (or rather took off) in Skies of Fire earlier this year, I knew I had to paint them. I had already completed my Ork and Imperial squadrons, and with lockdown in place in the UK, what better time to commit to painting a third?

I quickly decided to paint my squadron in the white colour scheme of the Vior’la Sept. This is the way Warhammer 40,000 T’au Empire models are painted for the front of the boxes, so I thought that would make them instantly recognisable. But how to do it?

I was lucky enough to interview the ‘Eavy Metal team’s Max Faleij and Connor Richardson about the painting of T’au Empire models shortly after the release of Psychic Awakening: The Greater Good earlier this year.* They revealed the super simple method they used to paint the Vior’la Sept colour scheme… so I flat out copied it!

Normally, when painting T’au Empire models, you can spend quite some time adding edge  highlights onto panel lines, of which there are many on the wonderful Aeronautica Imperialis aircraft. But this method was all easy shades, using chipping for highlights, which made for much quicker painting.

I started off with a Corax White basecoat, and added shades of Baneblade Brown and Gorthor Brown, both mixed with Lahmian Medium to make washes from those colours, before adding chips to the white with pure Gorthor Brown. It really was that easy!

If you want to see exactly how to apply this colour scheme to your T’au Empire planes, check out this brand-new video we made for Warhammer TV.

As with my other Aeronautica Imperialis squadrons, I wanted to mount my T’au Air Caste planes on some really cool modelled bases to add some narrative flair. The models were predominantly white, and as my standard rule of thumb for bases is to provide contrast to the models, I decided to go for a dark, urban style.

First of all, I covered the standard Aeronautica Imperialis base with some filler, ensuring I left the altitude and speed gauges free and usable. Then I piled on some sand, cork, and cut-up pieces of sprue to make rubble. I added some small buildings from the Adeptus Titanicus terrain range for a bit of flavour, and to emphasise the urban feel. Next, I replaced the standard flying stands with some 6mm perspex rod, simply to add varying heights to my fleet and to make sure the bottom of the aircraft weren’t scraping the buildings!

I’ve already played my first game with my new fleet, against the mighty Rob Crouchley (Warhammer TV’s Aeronautica Imperialis expert), and I managed to pull off a cheeky win! The T’au Air Caste aircraft put out so much firepower that I was a little blown away (as were all of Rob’s planes). I can’t wait for my next sortie!

Thanks, Nick! You too can join the T’au Air Caste with the awesome range for Aeronautica Imperialis. Pick up your Barracudas, Tiger Sharks, and Tiger Shark AX-1-0s** and scramble to the skies!

* You can watch this interview in the Warhammer TV Twitch archive if you fancy finding out more about painting T’au Empire models.
** If you’re wondering what the difference between Tiger Sharks and Tiger Shark AX-1-0s is, the answer is that one kind has really big guns, and the other has really, really, really big guns.

Le monstre ! Oo
