Strike from the Skies!

Hot on the tails of the new aircraft revealed in Skies of Fire (check here if you missed them), we’ve got even more teeny planes for you!

Avenger Strike Fighters have long been beloved by generals in both Warhammer 40,000 and the Age of Darkness for their ability to deploy armour-busting firepower at ridiculous speeds. This new, plastic kit will allow you to reinforce your Imperial Navy squadrons with four of the blighters!

We’ll have more details on these closer to release – for now, rest assured that you won’t have to wait too long to add these cult classics (we know some of you folks LOVE Avengers!) to your force.

Oui, excellent !!!

Flight Plan: Imperial Transports, Air Caste Bombers, and More!

014e6d8e.jpg

Imperial Navy Aces and T’au Kor’el* alike will want to strap in with a full five-point harness for this month’s Flight Plan. We’ve got a couple more model previews for you, another free scenario, and a taste of some the new T’au Empire background material you’ll find in the upcoming Taros Air War Campaign Book. Kick the chocks away and prep for launch!

Blips on the Radar

We’ll be checking out another couple of aircraft today, one from the Imperial Navy and the other from the T’au Air Caste. The first one might not be what you expect, but you’ll fall in love with it anyway.

Affectionately called “the Little Pig” because of both its distinctive shape and stubborn machine spirit, the Arvus Lighter is a true workhorse of the Imperial Navy. It’s armoured, but unarmed – you’ll want to protect them while they ferry personnel and equipment into and out of hotly contested war zones. On the other hand, they can quickly exit the atmosphere once the job is done…

This is the second finely detailed Forge World resin model we’ve featured for Aeronautica Imperialis, and the recognisable silhouette and details translate perfectly to the smaller scale. While not built for combat, the Transport value of 3, Max Speed of 6, and Ace Manoeuvres 1-6, will prove invaluable during missions like Garrison Relief and Troop Landing. Costing a mere 10 points each, the Arvus Lighter can zip in to score 15 points before using Rocket Boosters to blast into orbit, freeing up more costly aircraft to concentrate on taking out your enemies!

The fact they’re unarmed and valuable makes them a target of opportunity for long- to mid-range enemy aircraft, like the T’au Air Caste’s Tiger Sharks. Larger and more powerful than the Barracuda, these versatile aircraft can be tailored to punish both ground and air targets.

Tiger Sharks have a wide, flat design** with room for two primary weapons to the fore. You can choose between paired swiftstrike railguns to punch through tough targets, unleash no fewer than nine Firepower dice at mid-range with swiftstrike burst cannons, and ion cannons for maximum versatility. Add in the air-to-air missile pods built into the wing structure, plus optional drones, and a powerful seeker missile. These sleek bombers can dish out an awful lot of high-quality mid-range firepower. They’re even effective at long range, where most other aircraft falter!

Want to make sure your Tiger Shark keeps kicking out the pain? Spend a point on some Decoy Drones to give you a shot at avoiding high-damage missiles and rockets. Make the enemy work to strip each of your solid 5 Structure Points.

Speaking of drones, the Taros Air War campaign book delves deep into the T’au Empire’s way of war – including the use of advanced drone technology in the Air Caste.

In game, this is represented by optional weapons for your aircraft with All Round fire arcs, and special rules like Decoy and Defensive Drones. Now, let’s talk about this month’s free scenario!

Flight Deck Briefing

We hope you had fun with Ambush in the Clouds last month! This month’s free scenario sees one side desperately attempting to evacuate vital personnel with an overburdened transport, whilst their opponent pulls out all the stops to take it out. Download it now!

Stay Frosty

There’s loads more on the horizon, and we’ll be back in a month to show it off. Check out last month’s Flight Plan to download the free scenario and take a look at a couple more previews. While you’re waiting for these upcoming releases, grab a box of Thunderbolt Fighters and get ready to blast those Tiger Sharks out of the skies! Until next time – watch your six.

* Do you remember our lesson from last month? Kor’el is the term for T’au Air Caste Aces.
** It’s basically one large wing with some jets and a cockpit.

Technology Versus Tenacity in the Skies Over Taros

Aeronautica-Aug25-Header20ys.jpg

The upcoming Taros Air War Campaign Book for Aeronautica Imperialis is packed full of incredible new art and background material that dives deep into the T’au Empire’s Air Caste. On top of that, we also get to see more of the aircraft used by different branches of the Imperial Navy, like those seconded to the Astra Militarum. Before we get to them, let’s talk a bit about Taros itself.

Taros, the Hollow World

Predating even the Imperium of Mankind, Taros was an ancient human mining colony. For millennia, the people toiled and dutifully turned over a tithe from their planet’s rich mineral deposits in return for protection and security – or so the Adeptus Terra believed. In truth, the planetary governor had struck a devil’s bargain with the T’au Empire. When this perfidy was discovered, the jealous Imperium deployed a subjugation force to return the planet to its rightful place.

As it happened, the T’au Empire wasn’t about to give up their prize so easily. Taros had been claimed during the Third Sphere Expansion, and was now considered a part of the ever-growing xenos empire. When the Imperium arrived to take it back, they were surprised to find an entrenched and established adversary nestled into planet-wide defensive networks.

Battles Both High and Low

The people of Taros had been working closely with the T’au Empire for far longer than the Imperium knew, and the invading armies found ample evidence of treachery in the form of T’au architecture and technology. One of the grandest structures was a space elevator that delivered raw materials up and out of the atmosphere to orbital processing plants. The xenos called it the Supremacy of Earth and Air, but the Imperial forces simply dubbed it ‘the Needle’. Many of the fiercest air battles swirled around the dizzying heights of this soaring landmark, but some of the most intense fighting took place far below…

The relentless efforts of thousands of years of human mining, in addition to the coldly efficient drones of T’au Empire, resulted in a planet festooned with subterranean caverns large enough to house entire cities. During the course of the war, daring pilots on both sides took the fight underground. Meanwhile, the desiccated and sweltering surface offered little cover for the massive Astra Militarum invading force, and so the air war was often fought dangerously close to the terrain or in yawning chasms and canyons.

Skies of Fire

The Imperium of Man played the war to their core strength – nearly limitless legions of Astra Militarum troops and columns of heavy armour. Exposed as they were, the ground troops quickly came to rely on the Imperial Navy for defence.

The T’au Air Caste wielded sleek aircraft fitted with sophisticated targeting sensors that gave them an edge in low visibility situations, whilst their extensive use of drones kept pilots alive longer than those of other races. Both fighters and bombers mounted a variety of weaponry, each deadlier than the last, to eviscerate ground targets and send opposing aircraft spiralling to a fiery death.

The Imperial Navy countered this with fleets of Avenger and Lightning Fighters, protecting squadrons of Valkyrie Assault Craft as they redeployed entire regiments of the Astra Militarum where they were most needed. Vulture Gunships stalked the skies, ready to unleash hell with punisher gatling cannons. The Imperial fleets relied on their numbers to swarm the enemy.

Ultimately, the war came down to a test of high technology against sheer grit and determination, with neither side willing to back down in the face of horrendous destruction.

If you think this sounds intense, you’re absolutely on the right track. You’ll have to check out the Taros Air War Campaign Book to learn more! Don’t forget, if you have an Imperial Navy squadron, these new units combine seamlessly with your existing collection, ready to conduct daring raids on the Needle and dogfight through canyons and caverns.

Flight Plan: Big Guns Never Tire

014e6d8e.jpg

April’s Flight Plan has arrived, bringing you exciting previews of two of the upcoming aircraft that will be featured in the Taros Air War Campaign Book! The theme for this month’s featured aircraft is guns that are impractically large for their frames… One each for the Imperial Navy and the T’au Air Caste.

We’ll be taking a much closer look at their rules below. In fact, since we don’t have a scenario to give you this month, we’re just going to show you their full rules!

Avenger Strike Fighter

The Avenger is the strafing craft of choice for the Imperial Navy, created for attacks of opportunity against mass columns of armour and troop transports. Plus, it looks really cool…

In Aeronautica Imperialis, it’s a very solid ground attack plane for its size, and a more than capable dogfighter, which makes them quite versatile. The main feature – the avenger bolt cannon – is a beast at mid-range. Take a look at these stats and see for yourself!

4+ Damage, plus extra on a 6, isn’t bad at all when you’re rolling five dice! Bolt on a pair of lascannons or autocannons to tailor their firepower to your target of choice, add some extra missiles or bombs, and you’ve got a lot of damage output in a quick, light frame.

While similar in some ways to the Lightning Strike Fighter, the Avenger fills a different role in your roster. It can kick out more firepower, but it’s not quite as fast or agile.* The Avenger works best in a well-coordinated attack with the rest of your squadron, where it’s got a better shot at lining up the juiciest targets, protecting the more cumbersome aircraft, and setting up the perfect strafing run.

Watch out for the Max Altitude of 4, though, which could allow some enemies to fly higher than you and reduce the effectiveness of your firepower. And also keep in mind you can’t strafe a ground target and drop bombs on the same turn, so choose wisely.

While zippy little fighters are fun and all, we know T’au Air Caste players have been waiting patiently** for the really, really big guns. Well, Patient Hunters, let us introduce you to your new best friend.

Tiger Shark AX-1-0

Now THOSE are some Greater Good guns! What you’re witnessing is not one, but two heavy rail cannons that happen to have a Tiger Shark wrapped around them. This thing is an airborne assassin.

We know, it’s really easy to confuse this with the EXTREMELY SIMILARLY NAMED Tiger Shark AX-1-0-2, or AX-1-0-3, or even the AX-1-0-4! Luckily, the truly massive cannons are pretty hard to miss on the tabletop.

This is not a subtle aircraft. It’s good at one thing – taking out high-value targets before they can enter effective range – and it’s very, very good at it. If you’re concerned about your enemies getting up close and personal, you can choose instead to mount a pair of heavy plasma accelerators, changing up the AX-1-0’s role significantly. You can also spend 3 points to mount either cyclic ion blaster drones or long-barreled burst cannon drones to add a bit of versatility to this otherwise highly-specialised plane.

There’s Plenty More to Come

While we promised to bring you a new scenario in every Flight Plan, we had to take a break this month, given the lockdown. We hope the full rules for these two aircraft are just as exciting!

We can’t wait for things to get back up and running, and you’ll hear a lot more about the Taros Air War Campaign Book in which you can find these rules and more. Make sure you’re signed up for our newsletter so you know when they’re available to order for yourself! Until next time – watch your six.

* To be fair, the Lightning sets the bar pretty high in terms of speed and agility…
** Must be that “Kauyon” thing we’ve heard so much about, right?

Il me paraît plutot sympa cet avenger!

Sans être nul, on n'est pas vraiment sur le Avenger Strike Fighters have long been beloved [...] for their ability to deploy armour-busting firepower at ridiculous speeds, annoncé au départ.
