Aeronautica Imperialis: Skies of Fire

This new starter set pits the T’au Air Caste’s advanced aircraft against pugnacious Imperial Navy and seconded Astra Militarum flyers.

You’ll get absolutely everything you need to fly your first sorties, including a set of five aircraft for each side, a game mat and rulebook, dice, reference sheets, tokens and a transfer sheet. The T’au force includes three Barracudas and two Tiger Sharks, each with a wide array of weapon options. The Imperium’s forces consist of two Valkyrie Assault Carriers, which can alternatively be built as Vendettas, plus three Lightning Strike Fighters, one of which can be built as a Lightning Fighter.

The Imperial Navy and Astra Militarum craft are fully compatible with your existing collection, which makes this box a great choice for both new and current players.

Taros Air War Campaign Book

The T’au Empire took a sleepy Imperial mining world into its fold, and now the Imperium of Mankind wants it back. As the ground war grinds on, the T’au Air Caste attempts to fend off the Imperial Navy and Astra Militarum across engagements in the upper atmosphere, dangerously close to the surface, in rolling canyons and even deep underground!

Learn all about the T’au Air Caste’s role in the rigid social fabric of the Empire and discover their sleek, high-tech aircraft. You’ll also gain insight into how seconded Astra Militarum planes operate in the overall hierarchy of the Imperial Navy. All of this is set against the backdrop of a vicious war between the vengeful Imperium and a haughty, entrenched T’au Empire.

Taros Air War is a packed campaign book that includes the full game rules, stats, rosters and upgrades for a host of new aircraft, plus special rules and scenarios that will thrill any fan of Aeronautica Imperialis. It’s a must-have reference for new players, or existing ones that want to mix up their games, and it will be available in both hardback and ePub editions.

Now let’s have a closer look at those planes!

Imperial Navy Lightning Fighters

Faster than the ubiquitous Thunderbolt and armed with powerful laser weapons, Lightning and Lightning Strike Fighters make excellent interceptors and escort aircraft.

Lightning Fighters will soon be available to pre-order in boxes of six. We’ll take a closer look at them in an article later this week, so keep an eye out for that. And we’ll have another for these…

Astra Militarum Valkyrie Assault Carriers

The aircraft of the Astra Militarum have a very different role from the Imperial Navy proper, but in your games of Aeronautica Imperialis they open up new tactical options.

With the ability to hover, alongside transport capacity and heavy firepower, they’re the ideal craft to land or rescue ground forces. You’ll be able to pre-order the new planes in boxes of four from this Saturday.

Build a mighty fleet of Astra Militarum aircraft, or add wings of fighters to bolster your Imperial Navy squadron!

Now what would the Imperial Navy be without a worthy foe?

T’au Air Caste Barracuda Fighters

Sleek. Deadly. Droney. The T’au Empire relies on Barracudas to form the backbone of their Air Caste’s forces.

With versatile weapon hardpoints and drone bays, they can be tailored to take on a myriad of enemies effectively, and each includes a bay of missiles built right into the wings. You’ll be able to bulk up your squadron with boxes of six, giving you loads of options. And then there’s their big cousins…

T’au Air Caste Tiger Shark Fighter-Bombers

More of a missiler than a bomber, these larger and tougher ‘flying-wing’ aircraft sacrifice a bit of speed and manoeuvrability to mount more and stronger guns than Barracudas.

Just like their smaller counterparts, they can be armed with a variety of tactical loadouts to trailer their battlefield role, including deadly Seeker Missiles! They’ll be available in boxes of two, including a range of weapon options. Now, don’t confuse the Tiger Shark AX-1-0-2, AX-1-0-3, or AX-1-0-4 with this next plane…

T’au Air Caste Tiger Shark AX-1-0 Fighter-Bombers

The heaviest of the new T’au Air Caste aircraft, these airborne assassins trade versatility for truly massive weapons.

Kit them out with a monstrous pair of heavy rail cannons or heavy plasma accelerators. Both of these options add huge damage potential to your T’au Air Caste squadron, and you’ll get two to a box so you can try out both weapons. And where will these trials take place? How about over the…

Taros Area of Engagement Board

This pair of double-sided 19-by-18 hex boards are larger and sturdier than the mat that comes with Skies of Fire, allowing you to play bigger games without feeling cramped – sort of. More on that in a moment.

One side depicts The Furnace, a T’au Empire military outpost in the mountains, including a space elevator that become the focus of fierce fighting. The other side features the awesome Grand Reservoir, a subterranean water purification system large enough that aircraft can engage in tense dogfights entirely underground.

Gaming Accessories

Looking for a way to show your dedication to the Greater Good? This set of T’au Air Caste Dice will do nicely.

Keep track of all the new aircraft, high-tech upgrades, weapon options, ground defences and ace pilots with the Aircraft and Aces – T’au Air Caste Cards.

Of course, Imperial commanders will be able to pre-order their own Astra Militarum-themed Imperial Navy Taros Dice Set, complete with desert camo.

A new campaign book and starter set means there’s plenty of material to fill a deck of Aircraft and Aces – Astra Militarum and Imperial Navy Cards. These new items are fully compatible with your existing Imperial Navy collection, so you’ll want to pick up a deck if you’re adding any of the new goodies.

We’ll have loads more to say about all these awesome Aeronautica Imperialis releases throughout the week, so check back often!

Faction Focus – T’au Air Caste

Aeronautica-Aug25-Header20ys.jpg

Though young by the standards of the 41st Millennium, the T’au Empire has enthusiastically embraced advanced technology, guided evolution and a well-ordered division of labour to level the playing field with the ancient races that dominate the galaxy. Let’s take a look at what makes them different from the Imperial Navy and Ork Air Waaagh

What Makes the T’au Air Caste Awesome?

The T’au Air Caste is FLEXIBLE

The genius engineers of the T’au Empire cleverly created a set of highly adaptable chassis upon which they can mount a wide array of weapons. There’s nothing your enemy can throw at you that you can’t anticipate and counter. Drones can help you explore a niche or allow you to hedge your bets.

The T’au Air Caste is AGILE

Outsmart and outmanoeuvre your opponent to stay out of their crosshairs and line up the perfect shot. That flying wing design they’re so fond of is great for fast breaks and tight turns to get the drop on clumsier aircraft. And once they’ve got a lock…

The T’au Air Caste loves MISSILES

Every aircraft that the T’au Air Caste flies incorporates missiles of some kind. Seriously. And did we mention they have unlimited ammo? Relive your favourite cinematic moments of swarming missile strikes in every single game. You’ll be happily ‘sploding stuff long after your opponent has spent their heaviest payload.

T’au Aircraft

Barracuda AX-5-2, AX-5-3, and AX-5-4

c2c400cf.jpg

These planes are ubiquitous in the T’au Air Caste, forming the bulk of the fighting forces. It’s armed with a powerful railgun by default, but can be swapped for a burst cannon or ion cannon to mix things up. Add the optional drones and a seeker missile for extra punch. Combined with the ability to employ the devastating Bank manoeuvre, you’ll find yourself taking out your enemies with deadly tailing fire more often than most.

Tiger Shark AX-1-0-2, AX-1-0-3, and AX-1-0-4

56159ba2.jpg

The Tiger Shark is about twice the size of a Barracuda, packing double the weaponry without sacrificing much in the way of speed or agility. Like their smaller cousins, these bomber-class aircraft have moves their Imperial and Ork counterparts can’t compete with, helping them to hold their own against enemy fighters. That extra hull space means it can wield paired versions of the same weapons. But the real standout here is the paired swiftstrike burst cannon, which produces no fewer than nine dice at mid-range. With a Transport of 2, this airplane will win you games while shooting down your foes and achieving scenario objectives.

Tiger Shark AX-1-0

G3~z5uH~7Ak~Y5-g.jpg

That Transport capacity we just mentioned? Who needs it when you’ve got not one, but two stonking guns. Both the paired heavy rail cannons and paired heavy plasma accelerators will put the fear of the Greater Good in your opponents. The Tiger Shark frame makes these weapons even more dangerous, combining speed (it’s a point faster than the AX-1-0-2) and Ace Manoeuvres 1-4 to help you line up choice targets. Read April’s Flight Plan to get a little more insight on these airborne assassins.

You’ll have to wait and see what else the T’au Air Caste has in store, but if you like sleek planes, missiles and perfectly executed aerial action, this is the faction for you. Keep an eye out this week to learn more about the Astra Militarum’s aircraft, plus a look at the art and background of the T’au Empire’s Air Caste.

Faction Focus – Astra Militarum

Aeronautica-Aug25-Header20ys.jpg

At first blush, the idea of Astra Militarum in Aeronautica Imperialis might seem strange, but it shouldn’t. The troop transports and gunships of the Astra Militarum are technically seconded from the Imperial Navy, but the distinction is mostly academic. Valkyries and Vendettas are used almost exclusively to support the Imperial Guard, even going so far as to display matching regimental colours. Read on to see how they differ from the Imperial aircraft you already know and love.

What Makes the Astra Militarum Awesome?

The Astra Militarum is TOUGH

Valkyries and Vendettas have an extra point of Structure compared to similar-sized Fighter-class planes, despite being a bit cheaper to add to your squadron list. That makes a big difference, especially if you bring a lot of them along – which of course you should.

The Astra Militarum is ROUGH

Though designed for troop transport duties and ground assaults, they’re far from defenceless during high-air engagements. Much like the soldiers they carry to battle, these planes apply laser weapons to deadly effect.* The Vulture Gunship, in particular, is an absolute beast when fully kitted out – more on that in a bit.

The Astra Militarum is UNUSUAL

With the ability to score big points in missions that call for picking up or dropping off personnel, they can turn loss into victory in a hurry if your opponent is more concerned with taking on more immediate threats (like Vulture Gunships). Plus, with a minimum speed of 0, they can hover in place, which is extremely effective when you want to control the Area of Engagement and knock out Ground Defences.

Astra Militarum Aircraft

Valkyrie and Vendetta Assault Carriers

Rh28Cg9sEK2lAh2s.jpg

The Imperial Guard favour rapid planetfall deployments, swooping in with Valkyries and upgunned Vendettas to disgorge wave upon wave of ground troops. On the way down, their lascannons can destroy gun emplacements and enemy armour, or they can soften up enemy troops with multi-laser fire and clusters of rockets.

The ability to hover, combined with the Jump Troops special rule, allows Valkyries and Vendettas to deposit their deadly cargo accurately and safely.

kG4G3pr3VM2gJk8f.jpg

They’re labelled as Fighters in Aeronautica Imperialis, but they’re so much more than that. Include a few Valkyries in your squadron list to unlock interesting strategies and win by scoring massive amounts of points, instead of relying on your raw dogfighting ability.

Vulture Gunship

If ever an aircraft earned the title of gunship, it’s this one. Little more than a massive turbine engine with wings and guns strapped to it, the Vulture can perform every single manoeuvre in the game – the first to claim this feat so far! Any fighters trying to pin it down are likely to find themselves in the crosshairs before long, and that’s NOT a good place to be…

e6dca066.jpg

Armed with a heavy bolter by default, Vulture Gunships have some very tasty weapon options. Add the devastating punisher cannon to shred foes with 10 dice at mid-range! Prefer rockets? You can instead opt for not one, but TWO twin rocket pods to make that 12 dice at mid range – filthy, right? Firepower like that can’t be ignored, and as we mentioned earlier, the ability to hover means you can ‘park’ them to make an area of the board very perilous indeed.

Even though they only have two classes of aircraft – albeit with loads of options – Astra Militarum planes can be used alongside any other Imperial Navy aircraft with no fuss at all. You’ll find them useful in all sorts of situations once you get a little practice using them!

Pre-order the Valkyries and Vendettas from this Saturday, both on their own and in the Skies of Fire Starter Set! In the meantime, grab some Imperial Navy planes if you haven’t already, and start building up a crack squadron of your own. Keep an eye out for more news about the Vulture Gunships as soon as they arrive.

* We all know it’s really the bayonets that do the hard work, but they haven’t figured out how to use them effectively in the air. Yet…

Take to the Skies with the T’au Air Caste

Aeronautica-Aug25-Header20ys.jpg

Skies of Fire, the new Aeronautica Imperialis boxed set, sees the T’au Air Caste join the dogfights in the skies of the 41st Millennium. But who are these mysterious pilots?

U8srO23nXh6R0qHz.jpg

The T’au are divided into five distinct social classes, known as castes. There’s the Fire Caste who are the Empire’s warriors, and the Water Caste who comprise traders, bureaucrats and diplomats. The Earth Caste deal with the T’au Empire’s research, manufacturing and engineering needs, while the Ethereal Caste guides their kind towards the Greater Good. Finally, there is the Air Caste.* Traditionally, they served as messengers, and now they are the sole source of pilots and ship crews in the T’au Empire.

Wc3Bp3Io4Pk2Q3cB.jpg

The members of the Air Caste live almost exclusively off-world in orbital stations or in space transit. In fact, they’re sometimes referred to as the invisible caste because they rarely set foot on the ground. Originally, they had wing membranes, which allowed them to fly, but over time their bodies have evolved from spending so much time in low, or zero, gravity. They still have vestiges of those membranes, as well as hollow bones, and tall, slender physiques compared to other T’au.

7dB5hYvW4R0jFl97.jpg

Long term exposure to lower gravities means that the Air Caste has also developed superior depth awareness, alongside better acceleration and gravitational tolerances, than other races. Physically, this makes an Air Caste pilot better suited to the rigours of air-to-air combat than a human.

7Zv1vEe4QkS0yL6D.jpg

In battle, the Air Caste rains down death from the skies and provides air superiority for T’au Empire ground troops. They also work with the Earth Caste and the Ethereal Caste to develop new aircraft and policies to ensure victory for the T’au Empire.

The T’au Air Caste are bringing the technological wizardry of the empire to Aeronautica Imperialis in the new boxed set Skies of Fire, which is available to pre-order from tomorrow. Imperial Navy squadron commanders should send for some extra Thunderbolts as reinforcements so that they’re ready to meet the new xenos threat in the skies.

* Not to be confused with the Hair Caste, who would be responsible for supplying Ethereals with wigs if they were vainer than they are.
