How to play Armada: Shooting!

14th Oct 2020

Welcome to the latest in our series of rules blogs for Armada – the game of epic naval warfare. We’re just over a month away from release and we can’t wait to hit the high seas. In today’s blog, we’re explaining how shooting works.

Ships in the world of Pannithor can carry a bewildering array of cunning, brutal and magical weaponry. For simplicity, Armada uses four categories of weapons: Heavy Weapons (H), Light Weapons (L), Close Quarter Weapons (C) and Indirect Weapons (IDW). The game comes with different coloured D10 so you can roll for each weapon at the same time, without getting confused.

Each of the different types of weapons has a maximum range, which you’ll need to watch out for when moving. Indirect Weapons can be fired up to 22”, Heavy Weapons have a distance of 20”, Light Weapons are capable firing up to 14” and Close Quarter Weapons only fire 8”. Potentially this means you can weaken an enemy with a Heavy Weapon before moving in for the kill with your Close Quarter Weapons.

Armada_basileans1-1024x847.png

You have the opportunity to shoot your various weapons at the end of each Move Step – take a look at the movement blog for a reminder on Move Steps. This means that if you’re travelling at Battle Speed, for example, you could move, shoot, move and then shoot again.

ship-arcs.jpg

You can shoot from up to four different Weapon Positions: left and right broadsides directly to each side, and directly in front or to the rear. Typically, you choose what weapon position you’re shooting from and each weapon position can only fire once per turn. The most devastating attacks tend to be from the left or right broadsides, so skilful movement of your ship is key to make sure you’re in the correct position.

CHOICES, CHOICES!

When you’re in position, your ship card will tell you how many of each type of gun you’ve got in a particular position. For example, if you want to fire from the broadside of a Basilean Elohi, you’ve got two Heavy Weapons, one Light Weapon and one Close Quarter Weapon. First, you’ll need to measure the distance to see what guns are in range.

elohi-card-1024x721.jpg

An Orc Hammerfist is nine inches away, which means you can fire with the Heavy Weapons and the Light Weapon, but the Close Quarter Weapon is out of range. Now you pick up two blue D10s for the Heavy Weapon and one red D10 and roll to hit.

Each die that scores a 6 or more counts as a hit, while a natural 10 counts as a Critical Hit. Of course, just like any wargame there are a number of modifiers that can affect the roll. For example, if you’re within three inches of the target, you’ll get a +2 modifier for close range, whereas firing from further than 10 inches (unless it’s an Indirect Weapon) will suffer a -1 modifier.

DAMAGE AND CRITICAL HITS

Once you’ve rolled to hit, it’s time to see what damage has been caused. Each type of weapon causes the following damage:

  • Heavy Weapons: 2 damage
  • Light Weapons: 1 damage
  • Close Quarter Weapons: 3 damage
  • Indirect Weapons: D6 damage

For each natural 10 rolled, you then get to roll on the Critical Hit Table, instead of just causing normal damage. The Critical Hit Table has the capability of setting a ship on fire or even reducing the enemy’s speed. As a result, rolling a 10 can be devastating for your opponent.

FIRE AS SHE BEARS

If you realise your ship’s movement will take it out of range of the target, you also have the option to ‘Fire as She Bears’. This represents the ship’s crew taking opportunistic pot shots as they sail past the enemy. At any point during your Move Step, you can elect to Fire as She Bears and roll to hit and damage, as normal. Shooting and moving at the same time isn’t easy though, so the attack suffers a -2 modifier.

Armada_battle1-1024x809.png

However, it’s not just the active player that can elect to Fire as She Bears. Your opponent can choose to have a shot as you gleefully sail past. If your ship ends a Move Step within range of an unactivated enemy ship’s broadside, they can Fire as She Bears – once you’ve finished any of your shooting. This suffers the same modifiers and means the opponent can’t fire from that position later in the turn. So, it’s a potentially risky move!

Of course, shooting is only one of the ways to cripple your enemy and in our next blog, we’ll be talking about potentially lethal Boarding Actions.

ARMADA IS AVAILABLE TO PRE-ORDER FROM YOUR LOCAL GAME STORE AND THE MANTIC WEBSITE. IT’S DUE FOR RELEASE ON NOVEMBER 21ST.

Conclusion Armada c'est fini pour moi !!!

So, today we’re on to Armada. After launching – or should that be setting sail – in 2020 (right in the thick of the pandemic), Armada has continued to go from strength to strength. There are now seven fleets available (orcs, Basileans, dwarfs, Empire of Dust, Kingdoms of Men, Twilight Kin and elves), along with fliers, the amazing magic deck and the Seas Aflame supplement.

However, we’ve got plenty more exciting new releases coming up in 2022, so if you’ve been waiting to jump in – now’s your chance. Let’s take a sneak peek…

DWARF FLIERS

After the… ahem… interesting response to the dwarf gun worm, we went back to the drawing board to create two brand-new fliers for the dwarfs.

dwarf-fliers.jpg

The dwarfs will now get a giant, armoured raven and a zeppelin. The latter was one of the most requested alternatives to the gun worm. We hope you like these new dwarf fliers… because we’re certainly not changing them again ?

The dwarf fliers are due to take off in February.

SALAMANDERS

The next full fleet release for Armada will be the Salamanders. Since we first teased some artwork of these ships, there’s been a lot of anticipation for their launch. After all, apart from the elves, the Salamanders are some of the most experienced sea-faring folk in the whole of Pannithor.

The Salamanders possess a small but elite navy, with large, powerful ships. Their crews, often commanded by mysterious arkosaurs, are well-drilled – indeed, through some form of racial memory, many salamanders are spawned with knowledge of sailing and naval strategy in their fiery blood. The strange appearance of their battle ships has remained largely unchanged for millennia, and were themselves developed in response to their enemies in the East, foremost amongst them the ancient Xirkaali Empire.

If the imposing forms of their ships weren’t enough to deter most challengers at sea, the belching smoke from their batteries, and the dancing flames at their prows are sights to strike fear into the hearts of sailors everywhere. For the Salamanders are masters of firecraft, which they use to their advantage. The arkosaurs command fire elementals to do their bidding, while their own vessels are protected from flame by armour of drake-pelts and dragonscales.

DRAKE BATTLE SHIPS

salamander-xl.jpg

Their gundecks are packed with heavy guns, and their crews often comprise a contingent of Corsairs, whose firelocks pick off enemy commanders and elite troops during boarding actions with impunity. Upon the Drake’s aftcastles, scorchwings perch, awaiting the call of their master to swoop down and attack the enemy in a fiery conflagration. At the prow of each Drake burns a Crucible of Flame, which smoulders ceaselessly, until an arkosaur commands the greater fire elemental within to come forth and smite their foes.

TYRANT-CLASS BATTLE SHIP

salamander-l.jpg These formidable ships are usually the largest to be encountered on the Infant Sea, and are powerful enough even without the support of a Drake. In essence a slightly smaller and more nimble version of the mighty Drakes, these ships of the line take their name from the tyrant boarding party who dwell within their armoured crew compartments. Once driven to the brink of extinction, tyrants are increasing in number with each new spawning, and the utter brutality of these hulking brutes is enough to make even an ogre mercenary think twice.

J’KOOR’UK-CLASS WARSHIPS

salamander-m.jpg The J’Koor’uk is a solid, versatile vessel, and the most common class of ship in the salamanders fleet. Their balanced lines and numerous guns affords them good sailing ability and the power to speak with authority in battle. The role of the J’Koor’uk is to hold the line of battle in a regimented display of seamanship and gunnery, softening up the enemy for the inevitable decisive assault.

The Salamanders fleet will be available in February and pre-orders will start in January.
