Elfes sylvestres

Salut,

^_^ ). Piochons dans cette masse d'informations :

ITEM: It is well known that the Silvan Elves typically minded their own affairs and seldom interacted with Men. So they were not likely to send armies far afield as conquering or warring nations do. So in effect, they do typically fight where they live. High Elves of the Second Age are of course another matter altogether...

ITEM: Although Thranduil brought a contingent to the Lonely Mountain, it was composed of spearmen and archers. Cavalry is not mentioned.

ITEM: Heavy cavalry as a fighting force requires room to assemble, maneuver, and charge--something you don't find in dense woodlands that are largely wild and trackless. Charging over uneven terrain that is made all the more difficult by fallen trees and other natural impediments is not practicable.

ITEM: Light cavalry as recon or skirmisher also requires room to maneuver and good ground (or roads) for speed. Again, not typically found in ancient forests.

ITEM: Maintaining an effective cavalry force requires lots of grain and fodder, which requires a substantial agricultural base, which is not possible in dense woodlands, where native people tend to be hunter/gatherers.

ITEM: The conventional wisdom (probably originating with Tolkien) is that Elves rely on stealth. Horses make stealth difficult (size, smell, noise, tracks, spoor).

ITEM: In THE HOBBIT, we learn water was hard to come by in Mirkwood. Which means a mounted force in that forest would have to carry water for its horses. Again, impractical.

ITEM: A review of the great cavalry-fielding armies though history—Roman, Greek, Mongol, Parthian, Macedonian, French, English, Japanese, Byzantine, Russian, German, Arabian, Plains Indian, U.S. (Confederate and Union), et al—reveals none of them were a xenophobic, woodland-dwelling people. Their great battles were fought on plains, steppes, and fields—not in forests.

In short, there's no good reason to think Silvan Elves, or any other woodland-dwelling race, would include cavalry in their armies—and plenty of reasons that they would not. Not all fighting forces in the ancient world fielded cavalry, for many reasons. The same logic should apply to Middle-earth.
